Sentimental journey down Broad; next stop Apalachicola: By the time you read this, Mike and Connie Sams should be in the oyster capital of Florida. The longtime owners of River Dog recently sold the business (now Cosmic Dog Outpost at 1 Broad St.) and hit the road Friday morning. Facebook fans probably saw a few farewell parties in recent weeks as the Sams packed up. The couple first opened the paddle shop in the Cotton Block and then the nearest thing Rome has to a waterfront bar in the one-time home of Cotton Block Barbecue. They later blended the businesses on the bar site, welcoming a beer garden experience with visiting food trucks. Both were active in downtown Rome, especially Connie as a member of the Downtown Development Authority.
