SPORTS BUZZ

Something to keep us warm on this cold weekend ahead: First home game of the 2022 Rome Braves’ season is April 12. The Braves welcome the Hudson Valley Renegades with first pitch at 7 p.m. Braves

Why Rome must be a World Series trophy tour stop. The Atlanta Braves seek community feedback basically lobbying the team to bring the trophy to one of 151 locations. Here’s the pitch put together by Winfield Myers, a Rome Braves season ticket holder:

“Since the Braves’ single-A team landed in Rome in 2003, fans from across Rome, Floyd County, Northwest Georgia and the surrounding region have flocked to State Mutual Stadium to cheer on their Braves. During that time, they’ve cheered future Atlanta Braves stars Ronald Acuna Jr., Jeff Francoeur, Freddie Freeman and Max Fried, to name a few of the many Braves who played in Rome. With almost 20 years’ support under their belts, and an agreement signed to play at State Mutual until at least 2030 (and we’re counting on much longer), Rome Braves fans have demonstrated their loyalty to the franchise summer after summer. We love our Rome Braves from the glories of opening day until that sad day when MiLB season ends; we love seeing them climb the ladder to Atlanta; and we love heading down 75 to see the Big Braves play at Truist Park. No World Champion Trophy Tour would be complete without a stop in Rome to allow loyal fans to bask in the glory of our first World Series victory in 26 years. Rome has the tradition, the facility, the fans, and the spirit to ensure a well-attended and successful tour stop. It’s a must!”

More COVID delays for Shorter women’s basketball: “Due to COVID-19 protocols, the Shorter University women’s basketball game at Alabama-Huntsville, originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 29, has been postponed. The two teams and the Gulf South Conference are working on a potential reschedule date, but no date has been finalized.”
