Preliminary information indicates that at about 6 p.m., an Aragon Police Department officer responded to 12 Walnut St. on a call of a person threatening suicide.  Derick Rock was at the door with a gun to his head and threatening to shoot himself. The officer gave verbal commands to Rock for him to drop the weapon.  Rock pointed the weapon at the officer and the officer fired multiple times at Rock, hitting Rock. The officer began to administer aid to Rock. Rock died at the scene.

The GBI investigation is active and ongoing. Once the investigation is done, the case file will be given to the Polk County District Attorney’s Office for review.

This is the eighth officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2022.

From Hometown: This is the second GBI investigation into an officer-involved death in Northwest Georgia this year.

“The Calhoun Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Thursday, January 6, 2022. One man was shot and has died. No officers were injured. Preliminary information indicates on January 6, 2022, at approximately 3:45 a.m., Calhoun Police Department officers responded to 121 ½ Adair St. in Calhoun in reference to a burglary in progress and it was reported the burglar was armed with a knife. The responding officers encountered Jose Brito Lopez, age 37, of Calhoun, inside of the residence. Lopez failed to comply with the officers’ commands to show them his hands and he continued to advance toward the officers. One of the officers tased Lopez but the taser was ineffective, and Lopez continued to advance toward the officers. Lopez was shot by one of the other officers at the scene that he was advancing toward and died. None of the occupants of the home were injured. The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Gordon County District Attorney’s Office for review.”
