HIGH SCHOOLS

Girls’ high school basketball rankings from the AJC:

  • 6A: Rome, no. 6.
  • 5A: Calhoun, no. 7; Cass, no. 10.
  • A Private: Darlington, no. 8.

Sports Buzz: Focus on high school rankings. We had an interesting exchange Monday over high school basketball rankings and for good reason. Hometown follows the AJC’s rankings compiled by Todd Holcomb as he’s also the co-author of Georgia High School Football Daily as well, which does the fall football rankings. But there are others, including Score Atlanta and Sandy’s Spiel.

Let’s use Darlington’s boys’ team as an example, listed among the A-Private teams: The AJC has the team as no. 10; Sandy’s Spiel has the Tigers at no. 7; Score Atlanta, no. 6. That’s quite range, sixth through 10th.

At the same time, they’re all in agreement on Chattooga boys: The AJC and Score Atlanta also have Chattooga (13-5) ranked ninth — as does Sandy’s Spiel. Sandy’s also has Model boys at no. 10 (13-4); the others don’t.

As for the girls:

  • Sandy’s has Rome no. 10 in 6A; Darlington at no. 10 in A Private.
  • Score Atlanta has Rome girls at no. 10 in 6A; Cass at no. 5 in 5A followed by Calhoun at no. 8. Darlington is no. 8.
  • AJC: Rome is no. 6 in 6A; Calhoun no. 7 and Cass no. 10 in 5A; and Darlington no. 8 in A Private.

One other caveat is when each rating service posts their rankings.

Honors for Berry’s Sydney Blankenship: After a sterling weekend in which she averaged 25.5 points per contest, Sydney Blankenship has been named Southern Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The award was announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

“Sydney did a really good job this week of preparing and her hard work really paid off,” said Vikings head coach Thomas Johnson. “Most people will look at just her numbers, but she really works just as hard on the defensive end of the floor.”

Against Birmingham-Southern, Blankenship scored a career-high 27 points with nine makes from the field and nine makes from the free-throw line. She also added seven rebounds and three assists in the 79-69 victory over the Panthers. Two days later at Millsaps, Blankenship hit four three-pointers en route to 24 points. The junior pulled down seven rebounds again and came away with four steals in the 62-51 win over the Majors.

The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native now has four games this season with at least 20 points. This is her first weekly award from the SAA.
