Dr. James Michael “Mike” Pemberton passed away on 1-13-22 in Rome, GA at the age of 79.  He was born in Nashville, TN in 1942 to the late Mary Helen Routon Pemberton and George Thomas Pemberton. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Anne Elizabeth Pemberton.  Mike grew up in the Belle Mead area of Nashville and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy in 1960. He received his BA in English from the University of the South (Sewanee, TN) in 1964.  He met his wife, Nancy, at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville where they both received their MAs in English together in 1966.  Mike also received the MLS (Masters in Library Science) and the Ph.D. (English) at UTK.

Mike married Nancy Anne Garrett in Laurens, SC in 1965. They were married for 51 years before her passing in 2016.  He was employed as a professor of Information Sciences with Emeritus status at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville from 1977 to 2008.  He also worked as an English instructor (UTK), a university archivist (University of Alabama-Huntsville), a librarian (UA-H), a consultant with his own firm (Information Management Associates, Inc.), and as an executive editor of an international professional journal (Information Management, Association of Records Managers and Administrators).  He moved from Knoxville to Rome, GA in 2018 to be with family.

Mike is survived by his son, John Garrett Pemberton, of Rome, GA, John’s sons, Truett and Titan, and Mike’s sister, Susan T. Pemberton of Paris, TN, as well as his sister-in-law, Jean Garrett Allgood, and his brother-in-law, Al Allgood, of Tucker, GA.  Mike’s wishes were to be cremated and there will be no formal services.

Mary Bernice Silvers Mooney, age 96, of Rome passed away Thursday January 13, 2022.
Mary was born on November 15, 1926 in Rome GA., to the late Charlie Silvers and Beatrice Silvers. She was preceded in death by her husband JP Mooney.
Survivors include her daughter: Jessica Mooney; grandchildren: Jess Nichols, Jeff Harris, Jason Harris, Jon Harris; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside and interment services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday January 18, 2022 at East View Cemetery with Rev. Skider Chatham officiating.

Earl Glenn Godfrey

Mr. Earl Glenn Godfrey, age 83, of Adairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2022, in a local hospital.

Earl was born in McCaysville, GA, on January 21, 1938, son of the late T.M. Godfrey and Elsie Stuart Godfrey. He was a member of Rush Chapel United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of Shannon Masonic Lodge #100 F&AM. Earl was a self-employed auto mechanic who enjoyed restoring cars. He only other hobby was spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by a sister, Joann Smith.

Earl is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Eleanore Banghart Godfrey, whom he married October 26, 1957; a daughter, Debra Ann Godfrey and her companion, Mark Jolly; four grandchildren, Stephanie Nicole Wallace, William Kyle Godfrey, Dalton Lee Godfrey and Blaine Fricks.

In keeping with his wishes, Earl has been cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date.

Joseph S. (Joe) Branton, 98, of Kingston, GA, died on Thursday, January 13, 2022.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lee and Carrie Satcher Branton; his wife of 69 years, Mary Black Branton; nine siblings, Thelma Turner, Addie Moore, Ethel Taylor, Evelyn Bridges, William Branton, Eugene Branton, Otis Branton, Louis Branton, and Ralph Branton; and one daughter-in-law, Dolores Branton.
He is survived by two sons and their wives, David and Vicki Branton, Eddie and Jo Ann Branton, all of Kingston; one grandson, Dustin Branton of Nichols, GA; step-grandson Josh (Amber) Wilson of Jacksonville, AL; and one great-granddaughter, Britany Lenardson of Emerson, GA.
Joe worked at Southeastern Mills in Rome, GA for 39 years. He was a go-getter. He also farmed, everything from wheat to corn to cotton to hogs and finally cattle on the family farm over the years. Joe loved nothing more than being at home on the farm. He enjoyed cutting firewood, buying his last chain saw in his early 90s. He also tended the cattle until well into his 90s.
Joe also was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church, which he joined at age 13. Joe supported the church in every way he could, including helping to build the fellowship hall with a handful of other men.
The family will receive friends at Macedonia Baptist Church, 1810 Euharlee Rd, Kingston, on Monday, January 17, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 18, at 2 p.m. at the church with The Rev. Tommy Harris officiating. The body will lie in state for one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
