THE LATEST

The official word from the National Weather Service on Wednesday concerning Sunday’s forecast was this: “With all of the moving parts, it remains too early to provide deterministic snow and ice amounts at this time.” We’ll know more by this afternoon.

Based on the hourly forecasts for our area, we’ll see:

  • A half inch of rain Saturday evening and another inch into Sunday.
  • Perhaps up to 0.9 of an inch of snow, the first dusting around 3 a.m.; then a half inch between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the 0.4 of an inch between 2 and 6 p.m. Please note for your church plans.
  • Temperatures will be right at the snow line — 34 degrees — with a wind chill in the upper 20s.
  • And then the next concern is Monday morning — the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday for most. Whatever precipitation we get could freeze overnight (lows in the upper 20s), creating ice on area roads.

Our advice: Sunday will be a washout if not a white out. Be prepared to stay home most of the day. If you’re going to Athens for the championship celebration, come home Saturday night.  The overnight/Sunday Athens’ forecast is nasty — snow, ice and sleet.

Caveat: As the weather service says, this will change with whatever variables — but it doesn’t look good.
