Obituaries: Mr. Richard F. Behanan Jr., Doris L Cochran, Louis John Smith.

Myrtle Hill in Rome.

Louis John Smith was a caring father, grandfather, and friend. He passed away in Marietta, Georgia on January 7, 2022, at the age of 87. He was of the Baptist faith.

Louis was born on December 7, 1934, in Athens, Georgia to the late Ann Ross Smith and John Louis Smith. In addition to his parents, Louis is preceded in death by his sister, Ann Andrews.

After graduating from Athens High School, Louis attended Young Harris College and received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. His years at UGA were some of his favorites. He especially enjoyed playing on the UGA tennis team under Coach Dan Magill. He later put his tennis skills to use when he built a professional tennis program for one of the iconic Post Properties in Marietta in 1978.

Louis spent most of his professional life in public service. He worked for the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission, the Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia Joint Planning Commission, the Georgia State Planning Bureau, and was the Planning Director for Cobb County Georgia for almost twenty years.

An avid sports fan, Louis followed the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta Braves, and UGA teams faithfully. He was so excited to recently witness the Braves’ World Series victory and UGA’s Orange Bowl win. Louis leaves behind many friends and family members who will dearly miss those interesting sports discussions.

A fashion icon, Louis always strived to be the best dressed wherever he went. Louis’ fetching ensembles always included a sports jacket, hat, and coordinating watch, wallet, and shoes. He was once recognized in the Marietta Daily Journal as the fashion spotlight of the week for his blue chambray pants, white linen jacket and blue cap.

Louis spent many hours on the tennis court, the golf course, and around the poker table with friends. He was Johnny Carson, Larry Munson and Lewis Grizzard’s biggest fan. He loved his Indian Hills neighbors, and the family is so grateful for the way they cared for him. He bragged on his children and especially his grandchildren. Sharing their photos, GPAs, swim meet times, and tennis match scores was his favorite hobby.

Louis is survived by his children, Allison Watters (Ed), Rome, and Craig Smith (Lisa), Cumming; his grandchildren, Lilia Smith, Lleyton Smith, Grace Watters, and Ivy Watters; his step grandchildren, Ashley Whitmore and Lauren Whitmore; several nieces, nephews and special friends; and his beloved dog, Dooley.
