Those Varsity rumors for Rome are confirmed — but not the location. All the rumors point to Five Points but …

The Varsity’s march into Northwest Georgia is under way. First was a Cartersville site pretty much confirmed and now Rome is next — but just where is a mystery. Or is it?
We’ll start with the confirmation: Midafternoon Saturday, this call and text came in, confirming months-old rumors:
“Toles, Temple & Wright, Inc. Real Estate is assisting The Varsity Restaurants in securing a location in Rome and have identified a preliminary location. Bill Temple, vice president of Toles, Temple & Wright Inc. Real Estate worked to bring the group to Rome and Craig McDaniel, TTW Agent, has secured a location.”
Until Saturday, we would have bet you a naked dog with onion rings and a fried apple pie that it would go at Five Points, near North Broad and Martin Luther King Jr. most likely behind Dairy Queen. And that still might be the case.
More than a decade ago, the stories we heard put The Varsity at the former Schlotzsky’s/Five Guys at Midtown Crossing, now home to Aspen Dental.
As for Cartersville, the restaurant is said to be focused on an outparcel in front of Tractor Supply across from Savoy Automobile Museum.
There was no word from the restaurant group as of Saturday. A check of the website shows The Varsity has four locations — Atlanta, Kennesaw, Norcross and Dawsonville — as well as two spots at the Atlanta airport. The Athens location closed earlier this year and will be replaced by two restaurants — another near Athens and in Bethlehem.
