A Rome man has died following an accident Monday evening on Ga. 101 near Dean Road in Polk County, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Killed was the lone driver, Jordan Dwight Conaway, 40, of Rome. The accident occurred at 7:19 p.m. and shut down the highway for several hours based on earlier police reports.

According to the Georgia State Patrol:

The 2000 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Conaway was traveling south on Ga. 101. The driver failed to maintain his lane and traveled onto the right shoulder. The vehicle began to rotate counter-clockwise, striking a concrete culvert with its passenger side. After the impact, the Crown Victoria overturned multiple times.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and became trapped underneath it, as it came to a final uncontrolled rest.

Polk County Coroner Norman Smith said Conaway was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

This was the second fatal accident on Ga. 101 in three days. A Silver Creek man died Saturday in a collision near the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road on the Floyd County side of the highway.
