  • Parade Co-Chair Janet Byington reports 75 floats, six bands and “something special” from the Rome Braves are signed up so far for the parade on Nov. 30.
  • Lisa Smith of the Convention & Visitors Bureau announced a movie crew will be taping the parade, including key parts, to use as back drop for an upcoming production.
  • First National Community Bank city president Michael Baker, in greeting guests, said the bank has been sponsoring the event since 2003.
  • Full house including past grand marshals Frank Barron, Dr. Paul Ferguson and William Davies as well as Rome Police, Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus, ranking Rome Police officers and others.

Media release: The Christmas in Rome Committee announces the 2021 grand marshal is Doug Walker.

“Each year the committee takes nominations from the public of citizens who have gone above and beyond to give back to our community. Doug Walker is certainly one of those,”  said Parade Co-Chairman Jerry Rucker.  “Doug has been everywhere in our community for years telling the story of the people here and now it is our turn to tell his story and honor him for his service and dedication to our community.”

Walker was born in Arlington, Va. and graduated from Auburn University with a double major  in Communications and Journalism. He started his career in the U.S. Civil Service Commission in Washington and then moved to Waycross as news director for WAYX.  He came to Rome in 1984 as news director for WQTU-FM and later served as Associate Editor of the Rome News-Tribune from 2009-2021.  In 2021, he became City of Rome Public Communication Officer.

Walker has been honored by the United Press  International, Associated Press and Georgia Press Association where he was nominated three times as first place in Business Writing.

He also received the Georgia Recreational Vehicle Dealers Association Key to Outdoor Living Award and the United States Tennis Association Georgia Media Award.

Walker also serves  as a member of the Board of Directors of the Rome Floyd County Commission on Children and Youth, Chieftains Museum and Heritage Riverways Foundations.

Walker is married to Gail Walker and has two stepchildren and five grandchildren and is being honored today at a breakfast at Coosa Country Club.

The Rome Christmas Parade will return to Broad Street this year on Nov. 30 with a theme of “It’s Starting to Look A Lot Like Christmas!”

The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. The rain date is Dec. 2.
