Dining & Drink: A heavy metal night for Newby Farm & Vineyard at state wine competition. Last call at Sports Page? Moe’s welcomes new look — and Icees.

Newby Farm & Vineyard ‘metals’ at state wine competition: This update from Shannon Newby (pictured with Billy at the awards): “We are thrilled to announce our Blanc du Bois was recognized by the Georgia Wine Trustees as the Best of Georgia. Four of our wines received medals, but this additional honor was a big surprise. What an honor to be recognized among our peers, and to spend the evening sharing stories and celebrating the exciting things happening in Georgia Wine. Congratulations to everyone. I tasted some truly excellent wines and spirits last night. Cheers.”
The Newby wins include:
  • Gold: Newby Farm & Vineyard Blanc du Bois 2019
  • Gold: Newby Farm & Vineyard “Solstice” 2020 Carlos
  • Bronze: Newby Farm & Vineyard Lenoir 2019
  • The complete winners’ list.

‘Sports Page’ heading for the obituaries?

On Tuesday, Hometown Headlines wrote about all the changes under way near the “Little Garden” on Dean Avenue. Apparently more is brewing just down the block. The Sports Page, a beer-and-pool refuge across from East Rome Beverage Center, could be looking at last call. It seems there is a rent issue and the business owners say they can’t swing it. We’re not getting into the he said/she said stuff but they’ve put out a call for ideas, facing a Nov. 30 deadline.

Welcome to Moe’s new look in Rome: The Rome restaurant at 110 Shorter Ave. has had a remodel with some new branding and other features. What caught our eye last week: An Icee machine now by the drink and salsa stations. That’s an interesting addition to a refit as Icees have been around since the late 1960s (our summer salvation in Florida courtesy of the nearby 7-Eleven stores). There’s a $5 burrito special under way through Nov. 13 to celebrate.
