Rome Police: ‘There is no evidence of an attempted abduction’ outside a Rome medical office — or other locations — this week.

For the past 36 hours, area Facebook posts have shared “reports” spawned by a situation outside a medical office The initial report has been embelished to include other locations, similar events, the overall appearance of the victim, etc. All are false, based on Rome Police reports and statements.

At 1:10 Thursday afternoon, following two days of investigation, the police department shared this statement:

Rome Police responded to a report of a possible attempted abduction at Harbin Clinic on Redmond Road. Since that report, there has been widespread social media posts about numerous attempted abductions in the City of Rome.

The report is that about 1 p.m. Oct. 19, in the drive of the main entrance to Harbin Clinic, a red pickup truck with a camper shell occupied by an older white female and a possible male driver stopped to allow the female to go inside the clinic. A female went to assist the older female remove her walker from the bed of the truck. There were numerous persons going in and out of the clinic at that time.

The Rome Police Department has investigated this matter and has found that there is no evidence of an attempted abduction. The Rome Police Department does not have any information about any other attempted abductions as reported on social media.

If anyone has any information about this matter please contact Sgt. Pete Sailors at the Rome Police Department Criminal Investigation Division. 706-238-5118.

Aftermath: Rome Police posted the statement on city Facebook pages, sparking more than 100 reactions, 91 comments and 409 “shares.”

From Hometown: We also have a copy of the original incident report — apparently debunked by the ensuing investigation.  RPD did have access to security camera footage from the scene. The case was reported Tuesday at 3:01 p.m. but apparently happened at 1:15 p.m. at Harbin Clinic’s cardiology office at 504 Redmond Road NW. As the validity of that original report is now in in question, we’re not posting the incident summary.
