A 40-year-old Rockmart man has died and four others injured following a three-vehicle collision on Ga.101 near Wax Road on Thursday morning.
Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor identified the victim as Jocsan Abernathy and has notified his relatives. He died from massive trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:25 a.m. This is Floyd County’s 22nd fatality of 2021.
ounty Police Capt. Ron Hunton says the investigation is continuing. What they know so far:
- Abernathy was traveling north on Ga. 101 south of Wax Road when a southbound Chevy Avalanche crossed into the path of his Jeep Patriot, stricking it almost head on.
- The driver of the vehicle behind Abernathy’s, also northbound, was unable to stop in time and also struck the Jeep.
Arrangements for Jocson Abernathy were handled by Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home & Crematory.
For the second time this week, Ga. 101 and some connecting roads are jammed by an accident. Floyd County Police advise that “Rockmart Highway is temporarily closed at the post office while police work a serious wreck. Please avoid the area and find detours.”
Your best bet: Old Rockmart Road, using Donahoo Road to the south and Preacher Smith Road to the north.
