Arthur Rickman (Rick) Miller of Rome, Ga., passed away after an extensive battle from Covid-related complications on September 29. He was 70 years old.

Rick was born October 16 to Arthur S. (Doc) Miller and Francis (Duck) Burns. He was preceded in death by both parents, several aunts and his side-kick dog, Buddy.

Rick graduated from East Rome High School in 1968. He attended Berry College and left to enter the U.S. Army. After discharge, he attended and graduated from the State University of West Georgia (formerly West Georgia College). Rick co-owned and operated Callier Springs Golf Course in Rome which has been in the family for 86 years. He devoted most of his time to maintaining the family business, serving as manager, course superintendent, mechanic, or whatever was needed at the moment. He was an avid golfer and won many local championships.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Keown Miller to whom he was married for 41 years, and two sons, Grant and Brian Miller; sister-in-law Becky Keown (Gadsden, AL) and brother and sister-in-law Ron and Sheri Sinnock. The couple had a strong love and friendship and enjoyed going on “adventures” in their free time.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the Floyd Medical Staff and the ID/ICU staff for the wonderful care given to Rick. They are also extremely thankful to the dedicated Calliers’ Family for their help and support throughout this difficult time. Heartfelt gratitude also goes to Minister Danny Waits for the comfort given during Rick’s final transition.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at a later date.

Mrs. Gwendolyn Inez Jarrett Brown, age 89, of Rome, GA, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2021, in a local healthcare facility.

Mrs. Brown was born in Bartow County, GA on November 18, 1931, daughter of the late Jessie Milton Jarrett and the late Alma Craig Jarrett.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lee Brown, by a daughter, Shelia Turner, by a son, Michael Brown, and by 8 siblings.  Mrs. Brown retired from West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Co. in Lindale following many years of employment.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Wallje (Jerry), Rome; a son, Chris Brown, Rome; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at 1pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. William Atkins officiating.  Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Thursday from 12 noon until the service hour.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.


Mrs. Rosa Mae Barnette, age 90 of 2 Railroad Street, Cave Spring, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at her residence following months of declining health.

Homegoing service is incomplete, but will be announced later by Wright Memorial Mortuary.


Mr. Eugene McKinley Johnston, age 83, of Rome, GA, passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Mr. Johnston was born in Rome, GA on February 22, 1938, the son of the late Eugene Saint Claire Johnston and the late Ruby Lee Potts Johnston.  He served his country in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division.  He worked and retired from ITT Lester Metal Dyne.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Johnston and Bobby Johnston, and by his sister, Margaret Locklear.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathy Davis Johnston; his children, Natasha Krawiec (Douglas), Brandy Molock, and Eric Johnston (Jodie); his grandchildren, Benjamin Lee Molock, Isabella Stolz, Addison Stolz, and Hayden Johnston; his sister, Frances Goss (Bud); several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at 3:00 pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, with the Rev. Mikel Garrett officiating.  Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard providing full military honors.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, on Thursday, October 7, 2021, from 1:00 pm until the service hour.

Pallbearers are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, on Thursday at 2:30 pm and include:  Eric Johnston, Jack Brown, Joe Duke, Lee Molock, Matt Nasworthy and Josh Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Open Door Children’s Home, 5 Leon Street, Rome, Georgia  30165.


Marian Wood, age 99, of Rome, Georgia passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021. Marian was born June 26, 1922.

Mr. Larry Kenneth Landers, age 74, of Rome, GA, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021, after a long and courageous battle with lung and heart disease.

Larry was born in Rome, GA on September 10, 1947, son of late James Middleton “Lanky” Landers and the late Vivian Wilson Landers.  He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Marvin Herbert Landers and James Ladelle Landers.  Larry graduated from Armuchee High School in 1965 and served in the United States Army from 1966-1968.  He was a member of New Armuchee Baptist Church. He worked for and retired from Georgia Power Company, having 33 years with the company, with most of those years spent at Plant Bowen in the electrical maintenance department.

Larry was a Mason belonging to Floyd Springs Lodge #167 F. & A. M. and he received his 50th year pen and apron in March 2019.  In retirement, Larry enjoyed estate sales and working on his family history.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years of marriage, Mary Ann Young Landers; daughter, Melinda Leigh Carter (Allan); three grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, father-in-law and mother-in-law, John C. and Betty Young; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at 2:00pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel.  Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.  Social distancing guidelines will be followed, and masks are requested at both the visitation and funeral.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, on Wednesday from 12:00pm until the service hour, with social distancing guidelines being followed.
