Cartersville is about to welcome Johnny Archer’s Place Sports Bar & Grill, which bills itself as “Atlanta’s premiere pool hall.” Johnny Archer’s earned a 100 score in last week’s initial food inspection from Public Health, another key step to opening the doors at 138 S. Tennessee St.

Some final work is under way (walk-in cooler, beer taps) but they’re hoping for a soft opening in the coming week. Six to seven people have been hired but more are needed; call 808-439-4255.

It is the latest in a wave of openings just outside the core downtown blocks; the others include Largos restaurant and Game of Throwns axe throwing adjacent to Drowned Valley Brewery just up Tennessee Street.

Archer, 52, is a highly decorated professional pool player who picked up a cue at age 12. His Wikipedia page details championships across the globe. He’s joined about another pool-playing Hall of Famer, Rodney Morris, and Walter Breaux, who’s running the restaurant side. He owns Birdies’ Wings and this is his third location.

Likely hours: 11 a.m.-2 a.m.

Here’s a May Facebook video featuring Archer, walking friends through plans for the restaurant and billiards hall. The opening date slipped a few months from when this was produced:
