And then there were three. Cedartown, with its loss to Calhoun, and Trion, with its defeat by Bowdon, fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in this past week’s high school action. Those losses leave only three local teams—Adairsville, Armuchee and Cartersville—still without a loss as we reach the midpoint of the 2021 season. Adairsville faces a Region 6-3A challenge this week as the Tigers host unbeaten Ringgold, while Armuchee begins play in Region 6-A Public hosting Mt. Zion. Cartersville opens play in Region 7-5A at home against Cass.

Rome’s dominating win over Carrollton and Calhoun’s one-sided victory over Cedartown highlighted this past weekend’s play. The week ahead sees a full slate of action beginning with a game moved to Thursday night when Woodland hosts Blessed Trinity. Coosa-Model, Dalton-Rome, Pepperell-Fannin County and Darlington-Bremen highlight play in the weekend ahead.

The Rome Wolves reentered the Georgia High School Football Daily/Atlanta Journal-Constitution Class 6A rankings at Number 9 following the win over Carrollton, who fell from Number 3 to Number 10. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes rose from Number 3 to Number 2 behind Warner Robins in Class 5A, while the Calhoun Yellow Jackets held at Number 7. The Cedartown Bulldogs, even after the loss to Calhoun, held at Number 6 in Class 4A. The Darlington Tigers fell out of the Class A Public Top 10 despite the win over Kings Ridge Christian.  

Class 5A Number 9 Blessed Trinity (3-2, 0-0) at Woodland (1-4, 0-0) (Thursday)

  • Series History: Blessed Trinity leads 1-0
  • Last Meeting: Blessed Trinity defeated Woodland 49-0 on November 20, 2020.
  • The Blessed Trinity Titans, who were off Friday night, increased their record two weeks ago to 3-2 against the toughest schedule of any Class 5A school in the state with a 24-21 win over Eagles Landing Christian Academy. The Woodland Wildcats, who also were off Friday night, lost to Chamblee 50-21 two weeks ago for their fourth straight loss of the season. Blessed Trinity wins by more than 30. 

Coosa (0-4, 0-0) at Model (1-4, 0-1)

  • Series History: Coosa leads 38-20
  • Last Meeting: Model defeated Coosa 34-6 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Coosa Eagles were unable to get on the scoreboard as they remained winless in 2021 after a 53-0 loss to Cherokee County (Ala.). The Model Blue Devils, whose lone win came over Class 4A LaFayette in Week 2, lost to Chattooga 49-21 for their third straight loss. This looks like a must win game for either team to keep their playoff hopes alive. Model wins by 7. 

Dalton (1-4, 0-2) at Class 6A Number 9 Rome (3-2, 1-1)

  • Series History: Dalton leads 11-6
  • Last Meeting: Rome defeated Dalton 24-8 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Dalton Catamounts went head-to-head with South Paulding in a high scoring first half before falling short at the end 55-48 to fall to 1-4 for the year. The Rome Wolves scored 38 points to erase an early 7-0 deficit and took a 38-7 lead late in the third quarter to break a two-game losing streak and upset the Number 3 ranked Carrollton Trojans 35-27. Friday night is Homecoming for the Wolves. Rome wins by 20.

Pepperell (1-4, 0-1) at Fannin County (4-1, 1-0)

  • Series History: Pepperell leads 2-1
  • Last Meeting: Fannin County defeated Pepperell 36-23 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Pepperell Dragons, who entered Friday night with a 1-3 record against a challenging non-region schedule, suffered a 21-20 upset road loss to a Dade County team coming off a loss to Class A Mt. Zion. The Fannin County Rebels dominated Gordon Central 57-6 to go to 4-1 for the season. These were the two top teams in Region 7-2A in 2020. Fannin County wins by 12. 

Darlington (4-1) at Bremen (4-1)

  • Series History: Darlington leads 7-4
  • Last Meeting: Bremen defeated Darlington 21-20 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Darlington Tigers, who lost to Whitefield Academy 14-13 more than a month ago, defeated Kings Ridge Christian 21-14 for their fourth straight win. The Bremen Blue Devils, whose only loss came to Class A ranked Bowdon, cruised to a 49-8 homecoming win over winless Clarkston. This is the final game for both teams before they start their respective region schedules. Bremen wins by 3. 

Mt. Zion (4-1, 0-0) at Armuchee (4-0, 0-0)

  • Series History: Armuchee leads 11-9
  • Last Meeting: Mt. Zion defeated Armuchee 31-14 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Mt. Zion Eagles, whose only loss came three weeks ago to Landmark Christian, won their fourth game of the season 26-14 over Heritage of Newnan. The Armuchee Indians dominated Weaver (Ala.) 45-7 Friday night to start the year 4-0 for the first time since their playoff year in Class AA in 2009. Mt. Zion wins by 12. 

Unity Christian School (4-1, 0-0) at Johnson Ferry Christian School (4-0, 1-0)

  • Series History: Unity Christian leads 2-0
  • Last Meeting: Unity Christian defeated Johnson Ferry Christian 58-0 on October 23, 2020.
  • The Unity Christian Lions continued to roll on Friday night with a 36-6 win on a muddy field over Dominion Christian. The Johnson Ferry Christian Saints remained unbeaten for the 2021 season following a 40-7 win over Horizon Christian Academy. This is the first Georgia Association of Private & Parochial Schools Region 1-AA game for Unity Christian. Unity Christian wins by 7.

Cass (3-2, 0-0) at Class 5A Number 2 Cartersville (4-0, 0-0)

  • Series History: Cartersville leads 42-5
  • Last Meeting: Cartersville defeated Cass 59-0 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Cass Colonels defeated Ridgeland 30-6 two weeks ago to go 3-2 for the year before being off Friday night. The undefeated Cartersville Purple Hurricanes, who also were off Friday night, held off Cherokee 17-14 two weeks ago for their fourth straight win over Class 7A and Class 6A opponents. Cartersville wins by more than 30. 

Hiram (0-5, 0-0) at Class 5A Number 7 Calhoun (4-1, 0-0)

  • Series History: Calhoun leads 1-0
  • Last Meeting: Calhoun defeated Hiram 47-27 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Hiram Hornets, who are coming off an open week, remained winless two weeks ago following a 56-0 shutout loss to Flowery Branch. The Calhoun Yellow Jackets pulled off one of the biggest wins in the state this past weekend in a dominating 31-7 Thursday night win over Class 4A Number 6 Cedartown. Calhoun wins by more than 30. 

Class 4A Number 6 Cedartown (3-1, 0-0) at Pickens (3-1, 0-0)

  • Series History: Cedartown leads 6-1
  • Last Meeting: Cedartown defeated Pickens 52-21 on October 16, 2020.
  • The previously unbeaten Cedartown Bulldogs, who entered Thursday night’s game as a consensus favorite, lost at Calhoun 31-7 to drop to 3-1. The Pickens Dragons, who were off Friday night, captured their third win of the season two weeks ago by defeating Class 2A Union County 45-7. This is the first Region 7-4A game of the season. Cedartown wins by more than 30.

North Murray (3-1, 2-1) at Rockmart (3-1, 2-0)

  • Series History: Rockmart leads 5-0
  • Last Meeting: Rockmart defeated North Murray 49-42 on October 16, 2020.
  • The North Murray Mountaineers, whose only loss came at the hands of unbeaten Ringgold, defeated Sonoraville 27-20 to stay in the middle of the Region 6-3A playoff race. The Rockmart Yellow Jackets, who lost to Class 6A Rome in their season opener, defeated Sonoraville 50-28 two weeks ago before being off Friday night. Rockmart wins by 19. 

Ringgold (5-0, 3-0) at Adairsville (4-0, 2-0)

  • Series History: Adairsville leads 6-5
  • Last Meeting: Ringgold defeated Adairsville 23-17 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Ringgold Tigers recorded their third shutout of the year and remained unbeaten in a dominating 78-0 win over Murray County. The Adairsville Tigers also maintained their perfect record following a 22-6 win over LaFayette. The winner of this game will have at least a share of the Region 6-3A lead. Ringgold wins by 2. 

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (0-4, 0-3) at Sonoraville (2-2, 0-2)

  • Series History: Sonoraville leads 6-5
  • Last Meeting: L-FO defeated Sonoraville 44-37 on October 16, 2020.
  • The L-FO Warriors, who entered Friday night following three shutout losses, scored twice but still came up short in a 34-12 loss to surprising Coahulla Creek. The Sonoraville Phoenix, who had opened the season with shutout wins over Model and Fannin County, fell to 2-2 following a 27-20 loss to North Murray.Sonoraville wins by 27. 

Chattooga (2-2, 1-0) at Gordon Central (0-5, 0-1)

  • Series History: Chattooga leads 9-0
  • Last Meeting: Chattooga defeated Gordon Central 26-22 on November 3, 2020.
  • The Chattooga Indians established themselves as a playoff contender in Region 7-2A with a 49-21 win over Model. The Gordon Central Warriors remained winless in five tries in 2021 following a 57-6 loss to defending region champion Fannin County. Chattooga wins by 21. 

Southeast Whitfield (1-5) at Trion (4-1)

  • Series History: Trion leads 3-0
  • Last Meeting: Trion defeated Southeast Whitfield 35-6 on October 16, 2020.
  • The Southeast Whitfield Raiders, whose only victory came over winless Gordon Central against a non-region schedule, lost to Class A Gordon Lee 29-0. The Trion Bulldogs, who came into Friday night’s game undefeated, lost to Bowdon 35-13 in the game for the lead in Region 6-A Public. Trion wins by 17.
