Jobs: Floyd sees August jobless rate of 2.9%, Bartow even lower, 2.7% even as work force shrinks across Northwest Georgia.

From media releases: Rome/Florida saw a decrease in the unemployment rate over the month that was an all-time low for the area. In Cartersville, the jobless rate remained unchanged.

“Although we are seeing fewer unemployed individuals now than before the pandemic started, we are also still seeing a decreased total number of people in the workforce when compared to numbers recorded prior to the pandemic,” said Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “This will continue to cause a hiring crunch until we can attract more people back to the workforce to fill the record number of job openings.”

Rome/Floyd County: 2.9%

  • The unemployment rate was down one-tenth of a percentage point to 2.9 percent from July 2021. A year ago, the rate was 5.9 percent.
  • The labor force decreased in Rome by 362 and ended the month at 43,299. That number is up 1,629 when compared to August of 2020.
  • Rome finished the month with 42,050 employed residents.  That number decreased by 322 over the month and is up by 2,844 when compared to the same time a year ago.
  • Rome ended August with 40,600 jobs. That number was flat over the month but increased by 1,000 when compared to this time last year.
  • The number of unemployment claims went down by 40 percent in Rome in August. When compared to last August, claims were down by about 85 percent.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 493 active job postings in Rome for August.

Cartersville/Bartow County: 2.7%

  •  The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 2.8 percent in August. A year ago, the rate was 6 percent.
  • The labor force decreased in August by 325 to 50,580. That number is up 2,721 over-the-year.
  • Bartow County ended August with 49,169 employed residents.  The number decreased by 318 in August but was up 4,202 as compared to last year.
  • Initial claims for unemployment decreased 31 percent in August. When compared to last August, claims were down about 84 percent.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 672 active job postings in Bartow County for August.

Northwest Georgia: Gordon, 2.5% /  Polk, 2.9%  /  Chattooga, 3.6% / Region 2.7%

  • The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 2.7 percent in August. A year ago, the rate was 5.5 percent.
  • The labor force decreased in August by 1,878 to 421,256. That number is up 20,886 over-the-year.
  • Northwest Georgia ended August with 410,025 employed residents.  The number decreased by 1,761 in August but was up 31,498 as compared to last year.
  • Initial claims for unemployment decreased 27 percent in August. When compared to last August, claims were down about 84 percent.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 4,746 active job postings in Northwest Georgia for August.
