OUTLOOK

Scattered thunderstorms are forecast across the area today as a cold front pushes eastward. Some of these storms could produce locally heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning… Overnight shows left around 0.15 of an inch on the ground.

OUR SUMMER BY THE NUMBERS.

  • Fall begins at 3:20 this afternoon. It ends a summer that saw highs up to  97 degrees in Rome and 93 in Rome. Our average high was 79.3 degrees, 0.4 of a degree higher than normal. Cartersville’s average was 77.7, or 0.2 of a degree above the norm.
  • We saw double our normal rainfall between June 1 and  Aug. 30 (called meteorlogical summer), or 23.57 inches. Cartersville was at 19.56 inches vs. the normal of 11.11 inches. You can attribute much of that to the series of tropical remnants that moved through our area so far this hurricane season — and that doesn’t count the four inches we saw in recent days as what was left of Nicholas dragged across Northwest Georgia.
  • The highest one-day total for rain in Rome was 3.48 inches on Aug. 31; in Cartersville, 2.84 on Aug. 17.
