A Model High student is in custody after administrators received reports of a student possibly having a weapon on campus, says Sgt. Chris Fincher of the Floyd County Police Department. Parents shared an update they received Wednesday morning:

Statement from Floyd County Police:

A Model High School freshman has been charged with weapon violations after administrators found a knife and pistol in his possession at the school. There was never a threat but the incident is being investigated by the Floyd County Police Department.

The 16-year-old juvenile has been detained by police, pending charges that include two counts of possession of a weapon during a crime, two counts of weapon possession in a school zone, underage possession of a handgun, possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a vape.

A loaded 9mm pistol and a hunting knife were confiscated from the child.

According to a release from Floyd County Schools: “information was brought to the attention of school administration regarding the possibility of a student possessing a firearm on school grounds. Upon launching an investigation, the student in question admitted to having the weapon and it was
confiscated immediately.

“Safety and security of our students and employees are our top priority.”
