COVID this week: 10 Rome, Floyd schools start week with mandatory masks. Free COVID tests return to LakePoint. GNTC, Health Department begin new vaccination clinics.

What’s ahead this week as Northwest Georgia battles soaring COVID cases:

MONDAY

10 schools in Floyd County, Rome City will be under mask mandates. The city uses a 1% infection rate or higher to require masks; the county, 2 percent.

County schools:

  • Cave Spring Elementary
  • Coosa Middle.
  • Glenwood Primary,
  • Model Middle.

Rome schools:

  • East Central Elementary.
  • Main Elementary.
  • West Central Elementary.
  • West End Elementary.

FREE COVID TESTS RETURN

Free test sites return Aug. 25 (Catoosa) and Aug. 26 (LakePoint): The Georgia Department of Public Health has contracted with MAKO Medical to provide free COVID-19 testing at convenient locations around the state. In Northwest Georgia, MAKO Medical will provide free drive-up COVID-19 testing in Bartow County on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Thursday, Aug. 26, and in Catoosa County on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Wednesday, Aug. 25.

Bartow County (as of Aug. 26)

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Catoosa County (as of Aug. 25)

  • Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The PCR testing is done by nasal swab to determine the presence of the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has COVID-19 type symptoms or has been in close contact recently with a person infected with the virus needs to be tested for COVID-19, even if they are fully vaccinated.
