Buzz: Voccio to address Floyd County Democrats on Thursday. Cartersville, Rome newspapers pick up honors at Georgia Press Association convention. New tech lab for Georgia Northwestern.

The Floyd County Democratic Party will welcome Dr. Gary Voccio, Health Director for the Northwest Health District, to the monthly meeting on Zoom this Thursday from 7-8 pm. Voccio will offer updates on COVID-19 in our area and field questions from the audience.

The Georgia Press Association honored the winners of the 2021 Better Newspaper Contest on Friday at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel during the group’s 134th annual
convention. Local winners include:

The Cartersville Daily Tribune News, eight awards, including:

  • First place for magazine writing, magazine column writing, religion writing and breaking news.
  • Second place for investigative reporting.
  • Third place for education writing and local coverage.

The Rome News-Tribune, three awards, including

  • First place, business news.
  • Second place, humorous column.
  • Third place, lifestyle writing.

The RNT was listed in division one, which includes daily newspapers with circulation of 8,000 or above; the Cartersville paper was included for daily newspapers with circulation of 7,999 or less. Both newspapers have reduced their respective days of publication in the last year but qualified as “dailies.”
