Carolyn Selman Gilbert, age 89, of Rome passed away Monday July 19, 2021.

Carolyn was born near Armuchee on October 15, 1931, to the late J.O. Selman and Lena Mae Cordle Selman. She grew up in the Celenese Community and was a 1948 graduate of Rome High School. She married her lifelong love, Richard, on June 25, 1953. Together they embarked on twenty-four years of service in the military, as Richard joined the Air Force upon his graduation from college.

Carolyn was a homemaker and though the family was moved about, she remained the rock steady foundation and heart of their home. Carolyn’s home was always a welcoming place, wherever they lived. She was a loving mom, devoted wife, and doting grandma. She was there to love, listen, care, and counsel. She liked feeding and watching the birds in her backyard, especially the hummingbirds.

Carolyn loved to decorate her home with Snow Village and snowmen of all sorts at Christmas and her kitchen would be filled with the smell of Christmas cookies and homemade fruitcake she delighted in baking for family and friends. She liked late-night conversations, adored hugs and she loved the Lord with all her heart. Carolyn was a long-time member of Riverside Baptist Church and the Naomi Sunday School class and loved her church family as much as her own.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Richard Gilbert on October 21, 2016. She was also preceded in death by her infant brother, Deforest Selman; sister-in-law, Ann Selman; brother-in-law, Alfred Bohannon. She is survived by her son, Richard “Rick” (Loretta) Gilbert, Jr. of Hinesville; her daughter, Susan (Richard) Dunwoody of Rome; grandchildren, Jordan (Allen) Andrews of Portland, OR and Grant Crocker of Rome; her brother, Ed Selman and sister, Linda Bohannon, both of Rome; her sister-in-law, Debbie (Tim) Wesolowski of Naples, FL; and her brother-in-law, Mickey Gilbert of Monroe.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Winthrop Court, Magnolia Place at The Spires at Berry College, and Amedisys Hospice for the love and care they gave.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday July 22, 2021, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Lambert officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday July 21, 2021, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made in her name to Riverside Baptist Church, 48 Ash Street, Rome, GA 30161..
