A tragic Memorial Day weekend on Georgia’s waterways: 3 drownings, 30 boating under the influence arrests (3 here) and 11 boating accidents with 5 injuries and 1 death.

Memorial Day weekend ended with three drownings, 30 boating under the influence arrests and 11 boating accidents that killed one and injured five, according to final reports from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

In Bartow County alone, we tracked at least three BUI arrests by DNR offices and the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office.

There also was a drowning in the Acworth region. The DNR report states the drowning “occurred on Carter’s Lake in Murray County. A 3-year-old male was discovered in the water unresponsive. Before the Game Wardens arrived, Corps of Engineers officers, a Murray County deputy and family members attempted lifesaving measures without success.”

Some specifics on the report:

  • The drowning in the Gainesville Region occurred in Dick’s Creek in Lumpkin County. A 15-year-old male was swimming with family, slipped on a rock and went under. Lumpkin County Fire recovered the victim a short time later and the body was turned over to the county coroner.
  • The drowning in the Thomson Region occurred in the Ocmulgee River in Twiggs County. A 21 year-old male was swimming in the river on Saturday. He began to struggle, went under and did not resurface. Approximately three hours later, he was recovered by the Houston County Dive Team in 9 feet of water. His body was turned over to the Twiggs County Coroner.
  • Also, the name of the man Game Wardens have been searching for since Friday in Shoal Creek on Lake Lanier is Xi Zhu, age 56, of Marietta. He has not been located yet and the search for him continued at 9 this morning.
