Dining: Updates on eight new restaurants in the area — and a reminder that another favorite closes this Saturday.


Perhaps nothing changes as quickly as the dining scene across Northwest Georgia, in part because we’re known nationwide for our passion for restaurants. On Sunday, we previewed Blossom Hill BBQ & Burgers (click here); today, we’ll look at what else is on the way. Nine updates below (one is a closing):

Las Mesas Mexican Grill, 2817 Martha Berry Highway. Local restaurant “historians” (and we have a few) will note that WOW wingery closed four years ago this month. One restaurant took over the spot across from the mall but has since closed. Now comes Las Mesas Mexican Grill, started by some local chefs. Crews were busy inside the restaurant on Friday which coincides with this update from the owners: “… we are still working on the day of the grand opening; we will let you know soon!” A menu should post soon as well. Fuel Hickory Smoked BBQ & Grill is close at 5 E. 12th St. in Rome. We did some drive-by journalism on Friday and also saw work continuing indoors as well as some deliveries under way. A ton of work has been done inside and outside the former home of Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant, perhaps the most authentic Mexican we’ve had in Northwest Georgia. We have calls into the business for updates. The restaurant has gone through a series of upgrades and can be found just across the tracks from the Floyd County Health Department. Sam’s Southern Eatery also just about ready: How close is this one? The Public Health inspectors did their initial review on Friday and scored it at 100% Sam’s is in the former  home of Gondolier’s Pizza in Midtown Crossing off Shorter Avenue. It will be the 85th location of the mostly southern chain. Look for the hours to be: Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The menu is focused on fish, shrimp and chicken. Sam’s is known as “the home of the jumbo shrimp.” The menu also includes po’ boys, burgers, a variety of seafood and chicken including wings, strips, fried livers and fried gizzards. Click here.


Cartersville’s newest restaurant has one business week under its belt. Largos is at 214 E. Cherokee Ave. just off Tennessee Street. The menu: There actually are five of them  — from lunch, dinner, brunch, charcuterie board and dessert. You can access a compliation here and note the drink menus included. In addition to signtures entrees, note the sides as well. Hours: 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and brunch from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday.  Contacts: Website / Facebook / Phone: 478-888-4220. Some of other dining-related notes found on a wet napkins:

  • Popeye’s in East Rome. Don’t give up on seeing more chicken on Turner McCall in the former /A&W location. While the bigger plans apparently have been trashed because of the zoning hurdles and neighborhood complaints, a slightly different scaled restaurant is in the planning stages.
  • Starbucks on Shorter Avenue. Another restaurant location rescued, the former Hardee’s next to Sam’s Club is quickly taking shape as a Starbucks. It will be open by fall.
  • Lobrillo’s Vienna of Rome, at 1600 Shorter Ave. across from Soho, hopes to expand its menu soon. The Lobrillos continue to do well with the assortment of hot dogs, sausages, burgers and the most unique fries in town. We recommend the Polish sausage (we wimp out at peppers only) with incredible onion rings.
  • Fazoli’s at East Bend: Still looking for an August opening (building faces Hicks Drive across from Home Depot).
  • Last call at Jamwich: Don’t forget the Broad Street favorite closes as of Saturday afternoon. It is open all this week, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
