Dining: Honeycream targets downtown Rome’s sweet tooth with gelato, liege waffles, specialty drinks. More downtown news later this week.

 

There won’t be a shortage of spots to get some cool treats in downtown Rome this summer. Joining Mountains, City Creamery and the gelato bar at Honeymoon Bakery soon is Honeycream with a different spin on several favoites.

Due this summer, the website and Facebook already are drawing fans. The dining options include “Artisan gelato, handcrafted drinks and liege waffles (baked from dough, not batter, with other upgrades as well).

It is coming to 4 E. Third Ave., around the corner from Riverside Gourmet,  and the Facebook post says the venue was home to Rome’s first radio station.

The shop is being developed by Mike and Christie Meyer who moved to Rome with their family following Mike’s retirement from the Air Force. Writes Mike:

“We have dreamed for a long time about opening an artisan gelato cafe like Honeycream. We plan to open this summer, hopefully by the end of June. Our initial hours will be 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Thursday, 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday.”

As build-out continues, the Meyers offer an expanded insight into the whole process, including the electrical team on the job. You can track progress on the site’s blog. The website also offers brief tutorials on what gelato really is and how it is made (“Gelato Is not ice cream but it is a frozen dessert made of milk, sugar and cream.”)


Another downtown business should be back in the news later this week. We’ll have the details by Friday if not before.
