Buzz: Rome bags garbage bags at Walker Mountain Landfill effective June 1. Berry’s outdoor campus reopens to public Sunday. Elections board meets Tuesday.

Campus opens to public Sunday: The Berry College campus will reopen to the public beginning Sunday, May 9, until further notice. Hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the campus is accessible for outdoor recreation use only.


The Floyd County Board of Elections will meet on Tuesday, May 11, in the Community Room in the County Administration Building at 12 E. Fourth Ave. Caucus will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the meeting immediately following. The meetings are open to the public.  Everyone in attendance is asked to wear a mask and to practice social distancing.


No bagged trash at Walker Mountain Landfill effective June 1. From the city of Rome: The Walker Mountain Landfill would like the public to know that the Joint Solid Waste Commission has decided that because of heavy traffic and public safety concerns, the Walker Mountain Landfill will no longer accept any bagged household garbage, effective June 1.

Floyd County residents will need to utilize remote sites to dispose of bagged household garbage. There are six remote trash collection sites around the county. Each remote site has an attendant on duty.

Below are the hours for the remote solid waste collection sites:

HATFIELD, POTTS, SHANNON and BERRYHILL
Tuesday to Saturday: 7 a.m. to  7  p.m.
Sunday: 11  a.m. to  7  p.m.
Monday: Closed

CAVE SPRING
Tuesday and Thursday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Sunday: 11  a.m. to 7 p.m.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday: Closed

MIDWAY PARK
Monday to Saturday: 7 a.m. to 7  p.m.
Sunday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Remote collection sites are located at:

Berryhill Site – Located on Berryhill Road in the western portion of Floyd County.
Cave Spring Site – Located on Kings Bridge Road, southeast of Cave Spring.
Hatfield Site – Located on Jones Mill Road in northern Floyd County.
Midway Park Site – Located on Midway Park Road, which is off Wax Road, in southeast Floyd County.
Potts Road Site – Located on Potts Road in northeast Floyd County.
Shannon Remote Site – Located on Burlington Drive in northeast Floyd County in the Shannon Community.

Items not accepted  for disposal at the remote collection sites are hazardous waste, asbestos, tires on rim, liquid waste, mixed garbage with yard trimmings, batteries, appliances containing freon and waste from outside Floyd County.
