East Bend this week: Tropical Smoothie Cafe opens a week from today. All that wood you see going up belongs to Fazoli’s now due in August. And the metal? It will frame Kohl’s once groundwork is complete.

The opening countdown is under way at 1451 Turner McCall Blvd. Hometown photo.

It wouldn’t be the start of a new month without an update on East Bend in Rome so …

  1. Tropical Smoothie Cafe: Look for an opening by next Saturday, May 8 at 8 a.m. Health inspectors were on site Friday (100 score; see our updates). Training begins on onday was well.  The hours are 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday. The general menu is here and includes wraps, flatbreads, quesadillas, sandwiches, bowls and breakfast items from an “All-American wrap” featuring eggs, ham, cheddar, bacon and mozzarella to a peanut butter banana crunch flatbread with honey and granola. For more: Facebook.

2. Fazoli’s, just off Hicks Drive near Texas Roadhouse: We joked with franchisee Amit Patel on Friday about guarding the wood going up to frame the near fast-casual Italian restaurant going up at East Bend. He agreed, calling it “gold” in today’s tight construction market. That said, he hopes to open Fazoli’s by August with these hours: 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Applicants can apply using Indeed. Patel also is behind the Fazoli’s in Cartersville off Joe Frank Harris Parkway just south of the Main Street intersection.

Heavy metal: And while the wood is going up across the parking lot at Fazoli’s, the metal is in place as work really gets under way on Kohl’s between Five Below and what eventually will be Old Navy. These two photos show some of the inventory on hand for the project. Hometown photos

3. Also due by the Christmas shopping season is Kohl’s. The department store has been quiet about plans for the Rome location but permits have been issued, the ground is being prepped and now tons of metal take up dozens of vacant parking spaces as construction gets under way.
