Close to 50 boys and girls showed off their hitting, throwing and base running prowess on Wednesday night at Alto Park in the 2021 MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition hosted by Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation and sponsored by Rome Orthopaedic Center.
The athletes took turns hitting, throwing or running the bases. Their overall score derived from the three disciplines was tabulated and the top scoring athletes from each division emerged as winners.
Overall winners in each group division included, Cameron Blanton for 7-8 boys, Camden Hovers in 9-10 boys, Loxley Pilgrim in 9-10 girls, Charles Bowman in 11-12 boys and Finley Pilgrim in 11-12 girls.
Special thanks to Darlington’s baseball team and coach Matt Larry for taking time to help with the event.

Brooke Jones, a center from Sonoraville High, among Berry women’s basketball recruits for 2020-21:  Jones joins Berry from right here in Rome, Georgia where she played high school ball just north at Sonoraville. A second-team All-Region member, she has played int eh Final Four, Elite Eight and is a three-time 6AAA region champion. During her senior season, she averaged four points per game and nine rebounds per game. She is also a member of the Peak Performance club team. The daughter of Edward and Stephanie Jones, Brooke plans to major in ore-medicine and minor in psychology. Full recruit list.


BASEBALL

Atlanta Braves fall 9-3 to the Cubs. Marcell Ozuna’s 479-foot solo blast wasn’t enough as the Braves’ encouraging homestand ended with a loss.

Rome Braves 2021 season: First game is Tuesday on the road; home opener May 18.

  • Today: To promote the return of Minor League Baseball, the Rome Braves are giving away a collectible “Baseball Is Back” schedule poster. The Braves will be outside Gate 2 (near the Customer Service booth), and will bring it “safely to your car on the curb… limit 2 per car.” Details

TENNIS

May 8: High school tennis finals coming to Rome: The Georgia High School Association’s state championships in tennis will be played at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College. The schedule:

  • Girls Report at 8-8:30 a.m; play at 9 a.m.
  • Boys Report at noon-12:30 p.m.; play at 1 p.m.
  • Tickets: $5. Tickets will be sold exclusively on GoFan, no cash sales at site.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL/spring

  • May 13: Darlington’s spring scrimmage, 7 p.m. at home vs. North Murray.
  • May 14: Rome High’s Red and Gold Scrimmage
