 Mrs. Ollie Hodge Poe, age 92, of Kathleen, GA, formerly of Rome, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at her residence.

Mrs. Poe was born in Gainesville, FL on January 30, 1929, daughter of the late Peter Garfield Hodge and the late Cordia Missouri Thomas Hodge.  She was also preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Thomas Eugene “Tom” Poe, by 4 sisters, Lizzie Cook, Madalyn Jones, Gloria Don Fowler, and Arabelle Francis, and by 2 brothers, Getzin and Ottis Hodge.

Mrs. Poe was a graduate of Newberry High School in Newberry, FL, and a 1951 graduate of Berry College.  A career educator, she taught at Rabun Gap School, Johnson School, Central Primary, and at Midway School, where she retired following over 30 years in education.  She, with her husband, made history in 2012 when Berry College honored them as the first couple to receive the “Charter Fellows Award for Outstanding Service to the Profession of Teaching.”  Mrs. Poe was also active with her husband in the Carpenters for Christ program.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lindale where she was active in the W. M. U., in other mission’s activities, and was a member of the Syble Kilgo Sunday School Class.  While in Kathleen, she attended Peachtree Baptist Church in Byron, GA.

Survivors include her daughter, Sheila Poe Love (Bob), Kathleen; 3 grandchildren, Bowen Love (Anna), Orlando, FL, Stephen Love, Kathleen, and Blake Love (Rebecca), Kennesaw; 6 great grandchildren, Brody Love, Everly Love, Jace Love, Genevieve Love, Beckett Love, and Baylor Love; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 3, 2021, at 1pm at the graveside in Floyd Memory Gardens.  The Rev. Jim Cook will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Monday from 11am until 12:30pm.  Social distancing guidelines will be followed.

Mrs. Vesta Avery Salmon, age 93, of the Armuchee Community, Rome, GA, passed away Wednesday morning, April 28, 2021, at her residence.

Mrs. Salmon was born in Floyd County, GA on December 9, 1927, daughter of the late Howard Dallas Avery and the late Jessie Long Avery.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Salmon, by a son, Robert Mark Salmon, by her son-in-law, Mike Reynolds, by 5 sisters, Evelyn Avery, Edith Adams, Eunice Adams, Marnese Pope, and Sue Thornton, and by 3 brothers, Sidney, Herschel, and Robert “Tommy” Avery.

Mrs. Salmon was a 1947 graduate of Armuchee High School.  She began her employment with Higgins Shoe Store in Rome and was employed for over 25 years there before beginning her career at Berry College.  Prior to her retirement, she was the Supervisor for Oak Hill and the Guest Cottages on the Berry College Campus following 22 years at Berry.  She was a member of the Daughters of Berry.  A long-time member of New Armuchee Baptist Church, she was a member of the Avanelle Weaver Sunday School Class.  Mrs. Salmon sang in the O’Yes Choir, was a greeter, and was actively involved in the W. M. U. and the J. O. Y. Club.

Survivors include her daughter, Angie Salmon Reynolds, Armuchee; 2 sons, Howard “Pat” Salmon (Diane), Armuchee, and Joe Salmon (Jennifer), Rome; a sister, Dean Avery Beard, Rome; 9 grandchildren, Allen Reynolds (Maki), Bill Reynolds (Emily), Jessica Salmon, Melissa Ellis (Ben), Alisha Gresham, Dustin Salmon, Molly Mason, Broke Mraz, and Sierra Allmon; 16 great grandchildren, Scott, Ansley, and Luke Reynolds, Allie Reynolds, Jaden and Justin Salmon, Aubrie and Pyper Ellis, Alana and Raiden Gresham, Brylee and Gracie Salmon, Corbyn and Ava Mason, Rowen Robbins, and Cameron Doyle; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2021, at 3pm at New Armuchee Baptist Church with her Pastor, Dr. David Howard, and her nephew, Chaplain David Thornton officiating.  Interment will follow in New Armuchee Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at New Armuchee Baptist Church on Sunday from 1pm until 2:45pm.  Social distancing guidelines will be followed.

Pallbearers are requested to assemble at New Armuchee Baptist Church on Sunday at 2:30pm and include:  Mac Eubanks, Woody Wyatt, Tommy Davis, Mark Lamade, Michael Baker, and Anthony McClain.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vesta Salmon Scholarship Fund at Berry College, P. O. Box 490069, Mt. Berry, GA  30149-0069 or to the New Armuchee Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 37, Armuchee, GA  30105.

Mrs. Elizabeth Barrett, age 97, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on April 28, 2021.

Mrs. Susie M. Bryant, age 83, of Rome transitioned April 25, 2021. Service for Mrs. Susie M. Bryant will be Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at 1 pm at F. K. Jones Funeral Home in Peek Chapel. Interment will follow at Floyd Memory Gardens (Hwy 411 Rome, Ga.). Masks required.


Eva Clary Hinton, age 60, of Rome, GA, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021, in a local hospital.

A native of Rome and Floyd County, Eva was born April 23, 1961, daughter of the late Horace T. Clary and Annette Freeman Clary. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Rome. Eva loved collecting arrowheads, working puzzles and writing poetry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Hinton, a sister, Laura Clary McPhetridge, and a niece, Jessica Leigh Couey.

Eva is survived by a sister, Stella Clary of Rome; fiancé, Sean Maxwell of Rome; great-uncle, Thurston Clary of Americus, GA. Several cousins and other friends and relatives also survive.

In keeping with her wishes, Eva has been cremated.
