First-quarter accident reports were up 10.8% in 2021 vs. last year but the bigger number was fatalies on city roads — four between Jan. 1 and March 31 vs. none during the same months in 2020, Rome Police reports show.
Data included in the agenda package for Wednesday’s Public Works Committee/Traffic Commission/Transit Committee meeting set for 10 a.m. in the Sam King Room reflects the accident totals so far in 2021. It also shows that:
- Drunken driving arrests almost doubled this year vs. the same three months last year. Underage DUI arrests rose from two to four; DUI accidents jumped from five a year earlier to 19.
- Total traffic cases exploded from 1,895 in 2020 to 3,200 this year (69%). One factor to consider was the beginning days of the pandemic in March 2020.
Thr chart below shows which days had the most accidents so far this year with Wednesdays,Thursdays and Fridays having the most. Another chart in the package showed more accidents happen on the drive home vs. other times of the day although lunch hour and midafternoon numbers were close.
