You’ve got to respect the general manager of a new cafe who calls just before 10 p.m. on a Monday. Jennifer Voils’ enthusiasm for Tropical Smoothie Cafe at 1451 Turner McCall Blvd. is that strong. The cafe is across the court from Xfinity at East Bend or as Voils tells folks, “behind Texas Roadhouse.” And that says something for a “restaurant lifer” as she calls herself who was born and raised in Rome. She came home more than a decade ago to work in a few spots around town. Now she’s opening one of the newest genres in a community known for a passion of dining out.
So the big questions:
- When do you open? The target date is Saturday, May 1, but that could shift to May 8 with final work details and food inspections. “Ask Rome to please be patient” if delayed, she says.
- Are you hiring? A big yes. Open interviews are set for 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. this Wednesday at the cafe and again Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Same spot.
- Hours: These also are a little tentative, Voils says, but the current scenario is 6:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday. Again, these could change.
- The menu: We cheated and looked at other locations (such as Cartersville where Voils is training) to see if goes beyond smoothies. Voils says yup, stressing this is a cafe — with smoothies, too. The general menu is here and includes wraps, flatbreads, quesadillas, sandwiches, bowls and breakfast items from an “All-American wrap” featuring eggs, ham, cheddar, bacon and mozzarella to a peanut butter banana crunch flatbread with honey and granola.
