More than five years ago, Johnny and Jill Mitchell closed their popular Euharlee location to focus on new quarters in Cartersville’s West End. What they had was sacred grounds — a wonderful retreat outside of Cartersville and yet close enough to Rome with a tempting menu of Redneck Reubens and Coca-Cola Cake to make the windy drive along Chulio Road worthwhile.
The Mitchells have gone on to do special events and catering out of 650 Henderson Drive under the Johnny Mitchell’s Smokehouse banner; it remains a popular choice in Northwest Georgia.
So how do you replace a legend? Perhaps with an expansion of a “hometown” favorite.
Hometown Steak & Que has been in the works for several years. Owner Gary Chauhan, known for the smokehouse deli inside his Stop N Go Chevron station at 806 Euharlee Road, has had his eye on the former home of Johnny Mitchell’s Smokehouse.
The restaurant passed its initial Public Health review in December and has been open for several months now. The menu is attractive — steaks, burgers, smoked and fried chicken wings, tempting desserts. We checked back on an earlier interview with Chauhan on his Euharlee plans and couldn’t pass up this quote — especially the wings’ part.
“I currently have a smokehouse outside my station and we will be offering the same great food at the restaurant including brisket and our popular smoked chicken wings. We serve some 2,000 wings a week at the station now,” says Chauhan.
We’ve not been yet but will soon. Besides, you can’ t beat the name …
