As the Shorter Hawks prepare for rare spring football, they’re sharing a note about something else different about this season: A special decal on the back of their helmets.

The Hawks, who open Saturday at Kennesaw State, will show “CPJ” in honor of Coach Phil Jones.

Jones died Dec. 26 following a spirited battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and then coronavirus, according to posts from relatives on Facebook. He was 74.

Jones started Shorter’s football program, having been  hired in 2004, and led the Hawks for 11 seasons, retiring in 2016. He was named coach emeritus of the Hawks and was inducted into Shorter’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. His 47-year coaching career also included time at Gardner-Webb University, Southern Methodist University and the University of Georgia, along with 29 years of high school coaching.
