Atlanta Falcons: Tuesday likely marked the easiest day in Terry Fontenot’s tenure as the Atlanta Falcons’ general manager, but it’s hard to imagine him getting off to a better start. Fontenot was gregarious and engaging during his introductory press conference, laying out clearly his vision for making the Falcons a successful organization once again. Among the most notable points of emphasis for the former Saints vice president and assistant general manager of pro personnel pertained to his draft philosophy. “In the draft, you’re going to take the best player,” Fontenot said. “You can’t be afraid to continue [to add] at every position. There’s not a position that you’re going to say, ‘Oh, we’re good there, we’re not going to draft there this year.’ That’s just what I believe. … We’re never going to be afraid to take a player at any position and build a strength.” Expanded report.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL/local

Berry College: The tentative plan is to have a five-game football season begin sometime in February. The schedule will be finalized soon.

Shorter Hawks: Shorter head football coach Zach Morrison says football practice will begin at the end of January with a five-game schedule slated to begin on Feb. 27 with a game at Kennesaw State University. Two of the games will be played at home including the March 20 showdown against Edwards Waters College and March 27 against Fort Valley State University. Shorter’s home games will be played at Darlington’s Chris Hunter Stadium.

Watching and waiting on the 2021 Rome Braves. A year ago next week, baseball fans in Northwest Georgia were celebrating the start of the season in this area. For the past 18 years, the Rome Braves have hosted a “hot stove gathering” in January to talk with the managers, coaches, players and club executives. The 2020 edition was held at The Forum River Center with few if any aware of what was on the way. The pandemic first delayed and then wiped out the minor league baseball season. The major leaguers — sent home from spring training — eventually played an abridged season, crowing the Los Angeles Dodgers as champions.

In recent months, Minor League Baseball has gone through contraction and other changes, including the Rome Braves rising from lower A to high A in the Atlanta Braves’ organization. But still a mystery: Which teams will Rome play in the revamped system especially with so  many changes to the teams that made up the South Atlantic League.

Some major league clubs already have announced their minor league managers for the new year. So far, nothing new from the Atlanta club. We’ll have updates within a few days.

Atlanta Braves open spring training Feb. 27: The Braves will be based as the new spring training campus in North Port on the coast of Southwest Florida. The inaugural season was cut short by the pandemic in 2020. The first game of the Grapefruit League is Feb. 27 at Baltimore. The first “home” game is March 1 vs. the Nationals. Spring schedule
