Mrs. Edith Marie Ely Alred, age 82, of Rome, GA, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021, in a local assisted living facility, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Alred was born in Rome, GA on November 10, 1938, daughter of the late Lonnie and Ruth Bailey Ely. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Marie Alred Smith, by a sister, Odell Hann, and by a brother, Eugene Ely.
She attended Model and Rome High School and Coosa Valley Technical Institute. A Certified Professional Secretary, Mrs. Alred retired as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of the Rome City School System following 30 years of employment. She was a member of Fifth Avenue (Providence) Baptist Church. Edith loved God, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as her church family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Thomas Alred, to whom she was married on October 5, 1963; a daughter, Annette Drennon, Silver Creek; a son, Kelly Alred, Rome; 2 sisters, Roberta Cabe (Cleaston), Rome, and Lula Belle Prueter, Marine City, Michigan; 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, a special niece, Linda Streetman, Rome, and other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021, at 3pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Boswell and the Rev. Brent Wells officiating. Interment will follow in Rome Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Monday from 1pm until 2:45pm. Social distancing guidelines will be followed at the visitation and the service.
Pallbearers are requested to assemble at 2:30pm and include: Christopher Alred, Zach Cook, Ryan Doolittle, Jonathan Cook, David Compton, and Jeff Cabe.

Mrs. Emily Hogg Barba passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 7th 2021.
Emily Hogg Barba was born in Rome, Georgia on August 22, 1948, daughter of the late Glover Abner Hogg and Dorothy Archer Hogg. Emily was a graduate of the Thornwood School for Girls and attended Converse College, The University of North Carolina and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, from The University of Georgia. After retiring, Emily was devoted to spending time her grandchildren and her family. She remained passionate about all things artistic and exploration of creative expression in all shapes and sizes.
She is survived by her children, Anthony Piero Barba & Dorothy Elisa Forino, and her husband, Christopher N.M.P. Forino; her grandchildren, Mia Luna Forino and Luca Michael Forino; her sister, Lynn Hogg Robinson and her husband William Foster Robinson; and a number of cousins, nieces, nephews and countless lifelong friends.
A graveside service will be held at the Glover Mausoleum at Myrtle Hill Cemetery on Thursday, January the 14th at 2:00pm. The Rt. Rev. Frank Logue, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia, will officiate with the Rev. John Herring, Rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rome assisting.

Mrs. Mae Anna Johnson, age 90, of the Shannon Community, passed away peacefully at her residence Monday, January 11, 2021.
One of eleven children, Mrs. Johnson was born in Early County, GA, on February 12, 1930, daughter of the late Marion Carroll O’Neal, Sr., and Eula Eva James O’Neal. She had been a resident of the Shannon community for the greater part of her life and was a 1948 graduate of Model High School. Prior to retirement in 1992, Mrs. Johnson was a quality control specialist for Florida Tile. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome and loved working in her flower garden.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Griffin Johnson. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Gene O’Neal, M.C. O’Neal, Jr., and Louis O’Neal; six sisters, Dorothy Hootman, Louise Rutledge, Alene Evans, Pearly Barton, Gaye Williams, and Patricia Lowe.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by two daughters, Sharon Elaine Tate (Bill) Moody of Sun City Center, FL, and Myra Ann Tate Hunter of Shannon; one grandson, Jesse Gabriel Hunter of Maineville, OH; one brother, Leon O’Neal.
Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be Sunday afternoon, January 17, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Salmon Funeral Home with Pastor Matt DuVall officiating. Interment will be Monday in Floyd Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Johnson’s family will receive friends Sunday afternoon at Salmon Funeral Home from 3:00 p.m. until the service hour. In accordance with CDC guidelines social distancing and masks are required.
Mr. Jack Whatley, age 81, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on January 12, 2021 at a local hospital.

Mrs. Betty “Marie” Cleveland Agan, age 85, of Aragon, GA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at her residence.
Mrs. Agan was born in Cartersville, GA on April 28, 1935, daughter of the late Henry Cleveland and the late Lela Popham Cleveland. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Edwin Billy Agan, by 2 sons, Edwin Phil Agan and Don Anthony Agan, and by 8 siblings. Before her retirement, Mrs. Agan was a Chef at Northwest Regional Hospital for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and of Flint Hill Baptist Church.
Marie was a loving wife, mother, sister, nanny and “Puddin” as she was called by those closest to her. She loved having a big family and enjoyed them filling her home. Marie married her sweetheart, Edwin, and they shared a life full of love and laughter. She was a great friend to everyone she met. All were welcomed in her home where you would get a big glass of sweet tea and never leave hungry.
Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Agan, Aragon; 2 grandchildren, Jenna Agan Wilson (Michael), Rome, and Jason Agan, Duluth; daughter-in-law, Dondra Spears Agan, Aragon; 5 great-grandchildren, Trace, Charlie Ray, Peyton, Everlee and Maitlin; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at 4pm in Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Don Spears officiating. Social distancing guidelines will be followed.
Pallbearers are to assemble by 3:45pm on Thursday at Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery and include: Active: Jason Agan, Noah Lentz, Michael Wilson, Nick Lentz, Jimmy Cleveland, Gilbert Gentry, Shane Lucas and Michael Thompson. Mrs. Agan’s nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.
