Mr. Joseph Alan “Rip” Aycock, age 73, of Rome, GA, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2021, in a local hospital.

Mr. Aycock was born in Rome, GA on September 5, 1947, son of the late Joseph B. and Grace Parker Aycock.  He was a 1965 graduate of Coosa High School and attended Berry College prior to his military service.  Mr. Aycock was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving on the U. S. S. Warrington during the Vietnam War.  Following his naval service, he served for several years in the United States Army Reserves.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed with Georgia Power at Plant Hammond for most of his career.  Mr. Aycock was a Fifth Degree Black Belt and had studied martial arts since he was 18 years old.  He, with his family, owned and operated Roman Martial Arts here in Rome for many years.  Mr. Aycock was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, the former June Ables Bradley, to whom he was married on June 5, 1982; a son, Richard Bradley (Chindrayani), Rome; 2 grandchildren, Claire Todd and Atticus Bradley, both of Rome; a sister, Charlotte Ayer, Lindale; nieces and nephews.

In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Aycock will be cremated.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Sunday, January 10, 2021, from 3 until 5pm.  Social distancing guidelines will be followed, and masks are requested by the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 606 Turner McCall Boulevard, Rome, GA  30165.


Mr. Thomas Joe Porter, age 69, of Silver Creek, GA, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at his residence.

Mr. Porter was born in Canton, GA, on March 11, 1951, son of the late Ted Porter and the late Inez Harper Porter.  He was a graduate of Cherokee Technical High School and a veteran of the United States National Guard.  Before his retirement, Mr. Porter was Parts Manager at Riverside Toyota, where he worked for over 37 years.  He was a lover of sports and for over 25 years coached baseball at the Floyd County Recreation Department as well as basketball at the Floyd County YMCA.

Survivors include his son, Devin Porter (Danielle), Rome; 2 grandsons, Easton Porter and Truett Porter, Rome; 2 sisters, Wanda Graham, Canton, and Teddy Clark (James), Blairsville; 2 nieces, Lindsey Smith, Adairsville, and Haley Lee (Dewayne), Gainesville; 5 nephews, Cody Smith (Hana), Jimmy Clark, Johnathan Clark, Jared Clark, and Wade Graham.

In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Porter will be cremated and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 9, 2021, from 4pm until 6pm at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel.  Social distancing guidelines will be followed.

Our beloved Robert Hollingsworth Jr., age 77, of Rome, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

Robert was born in Oakland, California on October 21, 1943 to the late Robert and Debby Hollingsworth.  He has lived in California, Hialeah, Florida, Chattanooga, Tennessee and Rome, Georgia.  Robert retired from Brock Candy Company in Chattanooga and then moved to Rome.  Robert was a very happy, caring and loving person and never met a stranger.  He loved his family, his friends and will be missed by all who knew him.

Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Hollingsworth, and by his sister, Judy Hemrick.

He is survived by his son, Robert Hollingsworth III (Leigh); his daughters, Lydia Burroughs (Mitchell) and Kristina Hollingsworth; his grandchildren, Jacob, Hayden and Hensleigh Hollingsworth; his sister, Beth Ryder; his brothers-in-law, Fred Ergle (Pam) and Karl Ergle; his nieces and nephews, James Ryder (Maritza), Robin Ryder (Clay), Nancy Smith, Carol Roberts (Will), Jackson Hemrick, Angie McFall, Justin Tatum; his great nieces, Holly Tomlinson (Aaron), Heather Wassell (Dylan), Hillary Smith, Haley Smith, Jennifer Alberts, Andrea Banks, Jacob Banks and Abigail Banks.

The family would also like to recognize special friends, Kim Royston, LeAnn Blalock and the Deaf community.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, with the Rev. Adam Colston officiating.  A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at 12:00pm in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Brandon Bruce officiating.  A sign language interpreter will be present at all services.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, on Saturday from 12:00 pm until the service hour.  Social distancing guidelines will be followed.

The family would like to thank Floyd Heart Failure Clinic, Emily Costolnick and her staff, and the Floyd Medical Center 4 West nursing staff.


James Lewis Wade, age 61, of Rome passed away Thursday January 7, 2021 at a local hospital.

James was born on January 5, 1960 in Rome GA., to the late Doyle Wade and Betty Hovers Wade. He was preceded in death by his wife Melissa Alexander; children: Brandy Starr Alexander, James Wade, Jr.; sister: Teresa Wade.

Survivors include children Brandon Alexander, Brittney Shirley, and Bridgett Reynolds; siblings: Michael Wade, Sammy Wade, and Gail Wade.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday January 12, 2021 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Rome Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service hour on Tuesday at Good Shepherd Funeral Home.


Mrs. Virginia R. Parker, age 68, of Rome, passed away, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.

Mrs. Parker was born on April 15, 1952, in Floyd County, to the late, William R. Haynie, and Dorothy Allen Haynie. Virginia was proceeded in death by the sweetest grandparents, Benjamin & Jessie Allen, parents, Dorothy Allen Haynie and William R. Haynie, and by a granddaughter, Kristian Nicole Womack.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Mr. Kenneth Parker, 2 daughters, Brandy (James) Womack, Kim (Andrew) Stevens, both of Rome, 4 grandchildren, Christopher Tritt Melton, Destany Marie Womack, Bradley James Womack, and Keegan Stevens, all of Rome, and by a sister.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 3pm, in the chapel of Good Shepherd Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 12, 2021, from 1pm until the funeral hour.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers and include, James Womack, Drew Stevens, Bradley Womack, Steve Breeden, Jeremy (Bubba) Parker, and Tritt Melton. Keegan Stevens will serve as an honorary pallbearer.


Imogene Proctor Dowdy, age 80, of Lindale passed away Tuesday January 5, 2021 at her residence.

Imogene was born on July 1, 1940 in Floyd County, to the late John Frank Proctor and Etta Mae Williams Proctor. She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel L. Dowdy; son: Alvis Dowdy; brother: Sonny Proctor; sisters: Betty Jo Pinkard, Mertle Streetman; daughter in law: Genia Timms Dowdy.

Survivors include children: Mickey (Stephanie) Dowdy, of Lindale, Michael (Genia) Dowdy, of Rome, Gayle Ann (Gary) Akins, of Lindale, Mary Jo (Alan Mitchell) Akins, David (Elizabeth) Dowdy, Carol Jean Engles; grandchildren: Jessica Amore, of Maryland, Brittany Dowdy, of Lindale, Mikey Dowdy, of Rome, Justin Dowdy, of Rome, Jessie Akins, Brandon Akins, Jeffary Akins, all of Rome, Kimberly Lowery, of Rome, Christopher Akins, of Lindale, Misty Akins, of Rome, Lena Dowdy Griffin, Reecy Dowdy, Joey Dowdy, Skylar Bates, Samantha Dowdy, DJ Fredlander; great grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Sunday January 10, 2021 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home with Rev. Vance Styles officiating. Interment will follow in Sanders Cemetery, Cave Spring. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Saturday January 9, 2021 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home.

Pallbearers include the following gentlemen: Jessie Akins, Mikey Dowdy, Justin Dowdy, Hunter Ryan, Mi Pizano, Ernest Trammel, Tucker Ryan. Honorary Pallbearers: Gary Akins, Ronald Steel.


Charles Wendell “Chuck” Green, age 73, of Rome, GA, passed away Tuesday, January 5, 2021, after a 3-year battle with leukemia.

Chuck was born in Rome on February 19, 1947, son of the late James Henry Green and Edith Elvia Norris Green. He was a graduate of Model High School and a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in the Vietnam War from 1967 thru 1972, where he receive several commendations. Chuck received his Master of Business Administration degree from Valdosta State University. He was a cost analyst for Lockheed Martin Corporation prior to retirement. Chuck was a jokester and history buff who loved gardening and working with flowers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Clayton Lee Green.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Judy Winkle Green, whom he married May 10, 2003; three daughters, Valerie (Tony) Way, Sara Maxine Duncan, and Karen (Tony L.) Whitfield; son Wesley Z. Duncan; five grandchildren, Wesley K. (Amanda) Duncan, Riley (Tammy) Way, Heather (Brandon) Johnson, Mikayla Whitfield and Tony “TJ” Whitfield; eight great-grandchildren, Dylan, Keith and Allie Duncan, Grace and Maverick Way, Shyla and Makenna Turner and Ellie Johnson; a special sister-in-law, Bambi Johnson; a special niece, Jayla Rich; brother, David Green; two sisters, Elaine English and Janice Owen.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Salmon Funeral Home with Rev. Marvin Jackson and Garnett Andrews officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Chuck’s family will receive friends ay Salmon Funeral Home Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Social distancing will be followed and although masks are not required, they are suggested.

Pallbearers are asked to meet at Salmon Funeral Home on Saturday by 12:00 p.m. and include Wesley Z. Duncan, Riley Way, Tony “TJ” Whitfield, Eric Faulkinberry, Greg Simmons and Mark McDaniels.
