Friends are grieving tonight for 23-year-old Shelby Diane Dowdy who in died in an accident on Ga. 156 and Floyd Springs Road Monday morning.
On her Facebook page, they’re recalling fights and making up. Of hardy laughs over expired ravioli to just crying together. They’re lauding her for winning some personal battles and how far she came to make a better life.
The accident happened at the intersection of the highway and two-lane road. The tractor-trailer overturned following the collision. Traffic in the area was slowed if not closed for almost two hours, prompting detour alerts from Floyd County Police and the state Department of Transportation.
Witnesses were concerned about the truck driver as well as the vehicle had overturned. One caller said it “was just horrible.”
According to the Georgia State Patrol:
On Jan. 4, at approximately 8 a.m., a 2020 Toyota Corolla driven by Shelby Dowdy of Rome was traveling south on Floyd Springs Road. A tractor-trailer, driven by Kenneth Craig, 51 of LaFayette, was traveling east on Ga. 156.
According to the witness and also the truck driver, Dowdy’s Toyota failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Floyd Springs Road and Ga. 156. Her car entered the intersection and was struck on the right side by the front end of vehicle the truck. After impact, the Toyota rotated clockwise and left the roadway on the southeast side of Ga. 156 and came to a final uncontrolled rest.
The truck left the roadway on the southeast side of Ga. 156 traveling east. It continued east until turning back toward the paved surface and striking a large ditch. The tractor of re-entered Ga. 156 but the trailer entered the ditch causing the vehicle to roll onto its passenger’s side before coming to a uncontrolled final rest.
Dowdy, age 23, was fatally injured.
Craig was injured and transported to Floyd Medical Center.
