Known for the salad bar, the bean bar and a great mix of homemade favorites, it appears The Homestead Restaurant at 1401 Kingston Highway near Etowah Park is closed.

We drove by Thursday morning and found the business idle. The phone number is no longer in service. And the most recent things on the restaurant’s Facebook page are notes from customers about the restaurant’s fate. Among them:

“OMG I can’t believe U are closed for good !!! Where will we “ever” find another restaurant that even compares to The Homestead? We have been going here for years and years !!! So sad to see this come to an end—all of you will be missed very much & your good food & amazing salad bar.”

The only information on the front door states the restaurant will be closed Oct. 1, 2 and 3.

In June, the restaurant announced it was open for dine-in and carryout from 5 until 8 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays. But today even that page states, in red type, “permanently closed.”

If so, it leaves a legacy of numerous family meals, especially for those looking for a quick post-game stop after playing baseball at nearby Etowah Park. On Facebook, the latest page carries 35 reviews with an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 — pretty solid these days.

Reading the reviews, some dating back more than five years, you keep seeing references to “good food” and “comfort food” as well as good service.

Perhaps our favorite, though, is the Facebook handle attached to the page. How many restaurants today go by @pintobeansandcornbread?
