Jobs: September’s jobless rate ticks up in Floyd, down in Bartow; still higher than a year earlier (before the pandemic).

Rome, Bartow County and Northwest Georgia overall saw jobs increase in September. Additionally, Rome saw monthly increases in its labor force and number of employed residents for September.

“Although we saw some negative metrics in certain MSAs, a majority of the areas saw increases in jobs, employed residents, and labor force,” said Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “We really need to push the tens of thousands of jobs that we have on our online job listing page EmployGeorgia.com. The more we fill these jobs the more our state can regulate and show positive numbers throughout all MSAs.”

Floyd by the numbers:

  • In Rome, the unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage points in September, reaching 5 percent. A year ago, the rate was 3.3 percent.
  • The labor force increased in September by 40 and ended the month with 42,970. That number is down 1,090 when compared to September of 2019.
  • Rome finished the month with 40,840 employed residents.  That number increased by 15 over the month but is down by 1,769 when compared to the same time a year ago.
  • Rome ended September with 41,900. jobs. That number increased by 100 from August to September and was flat when compared to this time last year.
  • The number of unemployment claims went down by 10 percent in Rome. When compared to last September, claims were up by about 419 percent.

In Bartow County, the unemployment rate remained unchanged, keeping the rate at 5.2 percent. A year ago, the rate was 2.9 percent.

  • The labor force increased in September by 232. The September total was 48,188. That number is down by 2,477 from the total from September 2019.
  • Bartow County ended September with 45,696 employed residents.  The number increased by 225 in September but was down 3,518 as compared to last year.
  • Initial claims for unemployment decreased by 12 percent in September. When compared to last September, claims were up by about 971 percent.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 687 active job postings in Bartow County for September.

In Northwest Georgia, the unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points, reaching 4.7 percent. A year ago, the rate was 3 percent.

  • The labor force increased in September by 2,182. The September total was 404,153. That number is down by 17,180 from the total from September 2019.
  • Northwest Georgia ended September with 385,272 employed residents.  The number increased by 1,956 in September but was down 23,550 as compared to last year.
  • Initial claims for unemployment decreased by 9 percent in September. When compared to last September, claims were up by about 603 percent.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 4,876 active job postings in Northwest Georgia for September.
