From Floyd County Schools:
“Model High’s football game previously scheduled for this Friday, October 9, 2020, has been canceled due to the Chattooga High football team and coaching staff being quarantined because of direct exposure to COVID-19. A separate announcement will be made when a make-up game date is finalized. We hope both communities stay safe and healthy.
At least two more high school football games in Northwest Georgia are being delayed or canceled because of coronavirus.
It appears the Chattooga High football team is under quarantine for the next 14 days, starting Wednesday.
Radio station WZQZ 99.1 FM and 1080 AM reports the following: “Chattooga High School released information on Tuesday evening saying the CHS football team is now in quarantine due to a direct exposure to COVID-19.” It shares the following statement from Jeremy Heathcock, CHS assistant principal/athletic director:
I regretfully send this email to inform you that our football team will be quarantined for 14 days beginning tomorrow, October 7th, due to direct exposure to a COVID-19 case.
As a result, the games scheduled against Model this Friday, October 9th and next Friday, October 16th, will not be played at this time. Dr. Mobbs (principal) and I will be in contact with those respective schools to discuss options for the games to be made up.
You all will be notified when the games are re-scheduled.
The Model-Chattooga game was the opening of the 7-AA league play this season, writes Hometown high school columnist John McClellan. The teams have played 18 times with Chattooga dominating 10 of those matches. Model won last year, 12-6. Writes McClellan:
“The Chattooga Indians, who were off Friday night, fell to 1-3 a week ago in a 38-14 loss to Northwest Whitfield. The Model Blue Devils, who also did not play Friday night, are 2-2 following a 49-7 loss last week to Haralson County. This is a crucial early season region 7-2A game for both teams. Model wins by 2.”
The game is now in limbo as is the Chattooga-Gordon Central game a week from Friday. Remember that Chattooga had a bye week last Friday.
The news follows the late cancellation of a game between Woodland and Chamblee last Friday. The Wildcasts will not play again this Friday as scheduled vs. Union County. The latest from Union County High School:
“Unfortunately, Woodland High School has had to withdraw from this Friday’s scheduled competition for reasons related to COVID-19.; therefore, we will not have a home football game this Friday night. We wish the best to Woodland High School and all of those affected. Please see the revised schedule for the remainder of the season. We have added two games that are pending GHSA approval.”
On Sept. 18, Armuchee High’s football team was hit by coronavirus concerns, canceling the annual rivalry with Coosa and delaying another game to a Saturday night because of COVID-related concerns. That team had to canceled because of COVID so Armuchee ended up playing Cherokee County (Ala.) in that game, a loss.
