John McClellan’s high school football picks: Close wins for Rome, Woodland this Friday; Darlington, Pepperell should cruise.

The end of Cartersville’s 62-game regular season winning streak—the longest current streak in the state—was the biggest story of Friday night’s high school football action in Northwest Georgia. In other action on Friday, Cass, Unity Christian and Woodland (which did not get to play after Chamblee had to cancel the scheduled game due to COVID-19) kept their unbeaten records intact, while Rome and Rockmart captured big region wins and Cedartown attracted the state’s attention with a win over Heard County.

Region 7-AA starts league play this week with Chattooga and Model the key matchup on Friday. Rome and Carrollton play in a highly awaited Region 5-AAAAAA showdown in a relatively light schedule, while Calhoun, Cartersville, Cass, Cedartown, Rockmart and Unity Christian all have open dates on Friday. 


Chattooga (1-3, 0-0) at Model (2-2, 0-0)

Series History: Chattooga leads 10-8

Last Meeting: Model defeated Chattooga 12-6 on October 18, 2019.

The Chattooga Indians, who were off Friday night, fell to 1-3 a week ago in a 38-14 loss to Northwest Whitfield. The Model Blue Devils, who also did not play Friday night, are 2-2 following a 49-7 loss last week to Haralson County. This is a crucial early season region 7-2A game for both teams. Model wins by 2. 


Rome (2-2, 1-0) at Class 6A Number 9 Carrollton (1-1, 1-0)

Series History: Tied 3-3

Last Meeting: Carrollton defeated Rome on September 20, 2019.

The Rome Wolves, who have faced what is universally regarded as the toughest schedule so far of any team in northwest Georgia and whose two losses have come to ranked Class 7A teams, came from behind to defeat South Paulding 22-14. The Carrollton Trojans jumped out to an early lead and held off a second half rally to defeat Dalton 34-24. Both teams have losses to Class 7A Number 7 Collins Hill. Rome wins by 1.


Dade County (1-3, 0-0) at Pepperell (1-3, 0-0)

Series History: Pepperell leads 10-2

Last Meeting: Pepperell defeated Dade County 42-0 on October 24, 2019.

The Dade County Wolverines are 1-3 following a 35-33 loss to Class 1A Mt. Zion. The Pepperell Dragons also sport a 1-3 record after a surprising 34-21 loss at Temple. The Dragons still are the favorite for the Region 7-2A title. Pepperell wins by 26.


King’s Ridge Christian (2-0) at Class 1A Private Darlington (3-1)

Series History: Darlington leads 4-0

Last Meeting: Darlington defeated King’s Ridge 27-7 on September 11, 2015.

The King’s Ridge Tigers, who did not start their season until September 25, have wins over Landmark Christian 26-13 and Heritage of Newnan 20-0. The Darlington Tigers rebounded from their first loss of the season with a 20-7 win over Class 4A Heritage of Ringgold.  Darlington wins by more than 30. 


Lakeview Academy (2-1) at Coosa (2-1)

Series History: First Meeting

The Lakeview Academy Lions, who won only two games in 2019, picked up their second win of the season Friday night with a 31-12 defeat of Towns County. The Coosa Eagles, who were off Friday night, fell from the unbeaten ranks a week ago with a 10-0 loss to Class 4A Pickens. This is the last non-region game for the Eagles. Coosa wins by 6.


The King’s Academy (1-2) at Armuchee (1-2)

Series History: First Meeting

The TKA Knights, who finished second in Class AA in the Georgia Association of Private & Parochial Schools 11-man division in 2019, fell to 1-2 Friday night following a 28-21 loss to Terrell Academy. The Armuchee Indians jumped out to a quick early lead before Southeast Whitfield came back to defeat the Indians 21-7. The King’s Academy wins by 14. 


Woodland (3-0) at Union County (2-2)

Series History: First Meeting

The Woodland Wildcats, whose scheduled game Friday night against Chamblee was canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test on the opposing team, defeated North Springs 50-9 a week ago to go 3-0. The Union County Panthers defeated Pickens 28-14 to even their record at 2-2. This is Woodland’s final non-region game before a key Region 7-5A showdown next week against Class 5A Number 2 Blessed Trinity. Woodland wins by 1.


Adairsville (2-1, 1-0) at LaFayette (2-2, 2-0)

Series History: Adairsville leads 6-2

Last Meeting: Adairsville defeated LaFayette 28-0 on October 12, 2007.

The Adairsville Tigers, who were off Friday night, are 1-0 in Region 6-3A following a 38-7 win last week over Murray County. The LaFayette Ramblers defeated Murray County 62-22 to make their record 2-0 in region play. Adairsville wins by 6.


North Murray (1-1, 1-0) at Sonoraville (2-1, 0-1)

Series History: Sonoraville leads 5-4

Last Meeting: North Murray defeated Sonoraville 45-21 on November 8, 2019.

The North Murray Mountaineers, who defeated Ringgold 62-49 a week ago, saw their scheduled Region 6-3A game against Coahulla Creek Friday night postponed due to COVID-19. The Sonoraville Phoenix were unable to overcome a powerful Rockmart team Friday night in a 68-7 loss. Both teams remain strong playoff contenders. North Murray wins by 12. 


Gordon Central (1-3, 0-0) at Fannin County (3-0, 0-0)

Series History: First Meeting

The Gordon Central Warriors saw their record drop to 1-3 following a 37-7 loss to Class 1A Gordon Lee. The Fannin County Rebels, who are the newcomer to Region 7-2A in 2020, defeated Banks County 49-13 to remain the lone unbeaten team in the region. Fannin County wins by 23.


Off this week: Class 5A Number 6 Calhoun (4-1 after defeating Woodstock 35-14), Class 5A Number 4 Cartersville (4-1 after losing to Class 7A Number 8 Cherokee 14-12), Cass (5-0 after defeating Ridgeland 42-14), Cedartown (2-2 after defeating Class 2A Number 10 Heard County 48-14), Class 3A Number 9 Rockmart (3-1 after defeating Sonoraville 68-7), and Unity Christian School (6-0 after defeating Covington Academy 66-8)
