Unemployment rate continues to fall. Nearly 7,000 area residents without jobs last month, down from 10,460 in July.

In Northwest Georgia, the unemployment rate decreased in August pretty much across the board. Most counties saw a monthly increase in jobs and a monthly decrease in initial claims in August.

Nearly 7,000 Northwest Georgia residents were out of work last month, down more than 3,000 from August when 10,460 were unemployed. A year earlier, prepandemic, 5,486 people with looking for jobs.

The jobless rates ranged from 4.2 percent in Gordon County to 4.5 percent in Polk County to 4.7 percent in Floyd County to 5 percent in Bartow County to 6.2 percent in Chattooga County.

“It is very promising that we continue to see the unemployment rate drop month after month, while the job market gets stronger, evoking positive news for Georgia’s economy,” said Commissioner of Labor Mark Butler. “The state as a whole is leading the nation in competitive unemployment rates, coming in at seventh lowest.”

Floyd County:

  • In Rome, the unemployment rate decreased 2.4 percentage points in August, reaching 4.7 percent. A year ago, the rate was 3.8 percent.
  • The labor force decreased in August by 1,278 and ended the month with 43,035. That number is down 709 when compared to August of 2019.
  • Rome finished the month with 41,013 employed residents.  That number decreased by 154 over the month and is down by 1,049 when compared to the same time a year ago.
  • Rome ended August with 41,900. jobs. That number increased by 400 from July to August but was up by 100 when compared to this time last year.
  • The number of unemployment claims went down by 51 percent in August. When compared to last August, claims were up by about 753 percent.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 658 active job postings in metro Rome for August.

Bartow County:

  • In Bartow County, the unemployment rate decreased by 2.2 percentage points, dropping the rate to 5 percent. A year ago, the rate was 3.5 percent.
  • The labor force decreased in August by 1,377. The August total was 47,802. That number is down by 2,561 from the total from August 2019.
  • Bartow County ended August with 45,390 employed residents.  The number decreased by 225 in August but was down 3,222 as compared to last year.
  • Initial claims for unemployment decreased by 60 percent in August. When compared to last August, claims were up by about 1,041 percent.
  • The GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 706 active job postings in Bartow County for August.

Northwest Georgia:

  • In Northwest Georgia, the unemployment rate decreased by 2 percentage points, dropping the rate to 4.5 percent. A year ago, the rate was 3.6 percent.
  • The labor force decreased in August by 10,096. The August total was 401,791. That number is down by 17,164 from the total from August 2019.
  • Northwest Georgia ended August with 383,544 employed residents.  The number decreased by 1,594 in August but was down 20,385 as compared to last year.
  • Initial claims for unemployment decreased by 53 percent in August. When compared to last August, claims were up by about 697 percent.
  • Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 4,777 active job postings in Northwest Georgia for August.
