Truett’s Chick-fil-A Sports

Truett’s Chick-fli-A, 264 Shorter Ave., 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Drive-through and Door Dash.
Mount Berry Mall, 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. (curbside, carryout, Door Dash). Shipping Container, 6 a.m.-10 p.m. All Monday-Saturday.

Even amid a pandemic, there’s the Macon Bacon — and Savannah Bananas. Live, with fans, baseball is under way in Macon, Savannah and a few other cities. Thursday night, the Macon Bacon lost the home opener 8-3 to the Bananas from Savannah. So who’s playing? The team offers this description: “The Macon Bacon are a summer collegiate baseball team who play in the Coastal Plain League.” And the home games are at Luther Williams Field, the home of a team once known as the Macon Braves (now the Rome Braves). Tonight, it is the Bacon vs. the Eggs (seriously) beginning at 7 p.m. with fireworks to follow. Track the Bacon all season by clicking here.

LOCAL BASEBALL

Matt Larry Baseball Camp has openings for camp the week of July 6-10 (Monday-Friday). The half-day camp offers fundamental baseball instruction for players ages 5 to 14. The camp site is at the Levee fields at Riverview Park.  Follow the link for more information, or email Coach Larry at mlarry@darlingtonschool.org.

COLLEGES

Berry College head track & field coach Luke Syverson and head cross country coach, Paul Deaton, announced the addition of nine newcomers to their women’s teams for the upcoming season.

“While a smaller class, we are excited about the quality of this group of young women,” Syverson said. “Assistant Coach Morgan Mason did a great job of finding us the right mix of student-athletes that will immediately contribute to our team success. We are equally excited about the character of these women and how well they fit Berry. After missing their senior season due to the COVID-19 virus, they have a lot of potential that would have seen all of them improve tremendously on their marks. I know they are just as excited to get to campus as we are to have them here in the fall.”

Bios of the newcomers can be found here. Locals include:

Malorie Bradfield
– Rockmart, GA – Rockmart High School
– XC/Distance
– PR’s: 1600m – 6:36; 3200m – 14:34; XC 5k – 22:12

Malorie is the daughter of Greg and Krista Crawford, and was coached by Adam Blalock and Kevin Bachtel while competing for Rockmart. She is a three-time GHSA 2A State XC Championship qualifier, helping her team to a 3rd place finish in 2017. She is also a two-time All-Region runner, placing 5th in 2019 and 6th in 2017. Malorie plans to major in Psychology.

From Armuchee Head Football Coach Jeremy Green on new GHSA guidelines:

“After looking over the updated GHSA guidelines released this week, we are ready to release our schedule for the week of July 6.

“We will keep the same schedule that we have had with the exception of Wednesday. Players will report at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. We will be off the field at 8:30 p.m. We are moving Wednesday’s practice to the morning so that it does not conflict with Wednesday night church services. On Wednesday, players will report at 7:45 a.m. and we will be off the field at 10:30.

“We will get to do more football-related things like throwing 7 on 7 but we will not be allowed to wear helmets. The GHSA is not allowing helmets in order to promote the wearing of masks. If your son has a mask that he wishes to wear to practice, feel free to send it. We will have masks available as well. Please continue to send water.

“Let’s make the most of the opportunity that we have right now and get every bit of good out of it! #IAManINDIAN.”

GHSA relaxes COVID-19 restrictions starting Monday; masks ‘recommended’ but not required. The Georgia High School Association and the Sports Medicine Advisory Council appreciates our member schools’ efforts during the successful implementation of the Coronavirus Guidance Plan. The GHSA has elected to implement:

  • Intersquad competitions (7-on-7, 3-on-3, … ) are allowed but competition between schools is illegal.
  • Groups of 50 are allowed to re-group if it can be done safely.
  • Cheerleading, Softball and Volleyball tryouts are allowed.
  • Mask and face covering are recommended.
  • Each student should have their own personal water bottle (water bottles may be re-filled during workouts). No use of water fountains or “water cows” is allowed.
  • Football: No helmets, shoulder pads, girdles, knee or thigh pads can be worn at any time. The face mask and face covering recommended guideline does not refer to helmets or helmet face masks but to the use of cloth face covering/masks to help slow the spread of Covid-19.
  • Click here for a Revised Guidance which may be implemented Monday, July 6.
