Rome Police: Teen, 16, facing murder charge, to be tried as adult in shooting death of RHS junior Sincere Javier Estrada-Lopez on June 1.

This update Thursday afternoon in the Sincere Javier Estrada-Lopez murder case:  Jevion Andrez Benham, 16, has been charged with murdering the rising Rome High junior, according to Rome Police. The statement:.

The juvenile suspect in the Grady Avenue homicide (Sincere Estrada victim) has been charged with one count of Murder. He had his first appearance today and will be booked at the Floyd County Jail. He will be tried as an adult. — Debbie Burnett, Rome’s assistant chief of police.

It is the first update in the case since Benham was captured at the Chick-fil-A in Cartersville earlier his month (see post below). Said Burnett at that time: “He was arrested in Cartersville on unrelated charges. He has not been changed in the shooting.”

The original police report on the Rome shooting was as follows:

On Monday, June 1, 2020, at approximately 7:02 p.m., the Rome Police Department responded to the area of Grady Avenue to a reported shots fired call.

When officers arrived, they found an African-American juvenile male on the ground with gunshot wounds. First aid was rendered to the male but he was later pronounced deceased by the coroner.

Preliminary information received indicates that the suspect is also an African-American juvenile male.

The names of those involved are not being released at this point as the investigation is in its early stages and involves juveniles.

An autopsy will be performed by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur.

Services for Sincere Javier Estrada Lopez, 16,  were held on June 9. RHS had counselors available for grieving classmates.
