Jobless drops in May across Northwest Georgia but more than 13,800 people listed as unemployed (vs. 20,800 in April).

Northwest Georgia began to recover from pandemic-induced job losses in May but not by much. While reports from last month were improved vs. April, a look at May 2019 numbers show how much had changed in just a few months.

Gordon County posted the lowest jobless rate, 7.4 percent, for the month; Chattooga was the highest as 12.7 percent. A month earlier, the regional range was 11.8 percent to 16.5 percent.

Overall, 13,828 Northwest Georgians were counted as unemployed in May. That’s down more than a third from more than 20,800 in April of this year.

“The fact that almost every single monthly indicator in May’s job market report was positive shows great promise to Georgia’s economy up ahead,” said Commissioner of Labor Mark Butler. “Seeing these monthly numbers begin to increase means that we are definitely heading back in the right direction.”
