Mr. Ralph Lamar White, age 77, of Rome, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at his residence.

Mr. White was born in Alabama on June 17, 1942, son of the late Eulas F. “Speedy” White and the late Venice Lockridge White.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Annette Smith White, on June 14, 2010.

Mr. White was a veteran of the U. S. Airforce and was a graduate of Berry College.  Mr. White was very involved in the Rome Community and was a member of Second Avenue Baptist Church, Lion’s Club, Exchange Club (where he served on the Board), Kiwanis Club, Keep Rome Beautiful Committee, Adams-Coker American Legion Post #52 and the Northwest Georgia Wood Turners Association.

He served on the Board at Sara Hightower Regional Library and Georgia Northwestern Technical College.  He was a past recipient of the Heart of the Community Award and was a former Grand Marshal for the Rome Christmas Parade.  Prior to retirement, Mr. White worked as a salesman to contractors at O’Neal’s, Smith-Evans Supply Company and Mathis Builders Hardware.

Mr. White is survived by his “adopted” daughter, Gillis Titus, Ringgold, and two “adopted” grandchildren, Promise Grisham and Cody Gilliland.

In accordance to his wishes, Mr. White will be cremated, and he will be interred with his wife during a private graveside service at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Dr. Monte Stallins officiating.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Ressie and Jewell for all their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Second Avenue Baptist Church, the Sara Hightower Regional Library or the Lion’s Club.

Mr. Russell Lamar Sheffield, age 68, of Rome, GA, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020, in a local hospital.

Mr. Sheffield was born in Rome, GA on October 19, 1951, son of the late Belton Palmer Sheffield and the late Patsy Ruth Cox Sheffield.  He was a 1969 graduate of Pepperell High School in Lindale.  Prior to his retirement, he was a Technician with Cook’s Pest Control here in Rome for 41 years.  He was a former member of the Rome Elks Lodge and the Emergency Management Dive Team.  Following his retirement, he was an avid fisherman.  Mr. Sheffield was a member of Pleasant Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include his former wife, Cherry Milam, Rome; his step-son, Jeremy Paul Hulsey, Millbrook, AL; his brother, Sidney Sheffield (Jean), Silver Creek; a niece, Amy Sheffield, Atlanta; a nephew, Luke Sheffield (Anne), and their children, Jake and Rowan, Cartersville; aunts, uncles, and cousins.

In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Sheffield will be cremated, and his remains will be placed in the family lot in Pleasant Hope Cemetery.  No formal services are planned at this time.

Clara Elizabeth Downs, age 96, of Rome passed away at her home Tuesday, May 19, 2020 after a 9 year battle with Alzheimers. Clara was born in Athens, TN. on May 9, 1924 to the late Arter Colloms and Sara Emma Everett Colloms. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph James Downs who she married April, 15, 1944 and her only sibling Bernice Levinson.

Clara moved to Rome in 1942 where she worked for Rome Provision Company for a number of years. She later worked for Levinson Brothers Meat Packing, a family owned company, until retirement. Clara was of the Methodist faith and a Charter member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church of Rome. She was very active in the VFW Women’s Auxiliary for nearly 35 years. She held the office of secretary for many of those years. She was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a daughter Avis Colleen Studdard, Rome and a son Douglas James Downs, Powder Springs; granddaughter Casey Bowers (Jim), Rome, special friend Jackie Brooks, Rome.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm, Saturday, May 23, 2020 in the Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with Dr. Allen Hunt officiating. Interment will be in East View Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and love to our wonderful caregivers who cared for our mother as if she were their own, DeLana Gentry, Sandra Gibson, Tara Threadgill, Molly Crider and Mary Vaughn. A special thank you to the wonderful staff of Pruitt Hospice.


Mrs. Jean McCollum Johnson, age 91, of Rome, GA, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Spring Garden, AL on May 30, 1928, daughter of the late Pink Emery “P. E.” McCollum and the late Nobia Potts McCollum.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Johnson, by a sister, Charmon Phillips, and by 5 brothers, Harvey, Tommy, Norman, Bill, and Glenn McCollum.  Prior to her retirement, she was employed for several years at Redmond Regional Medical Center.  She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Regina Johnson, Rome; 2 sons, Chris Johnson (Jana), Cartersville, and Steve Johnson (Ramon), Salem, MA; a sister, Sue Shores, Rome; 2 brothers, David McCollum, Cedar Bluff, AL, and Jack McCollum, Yorba Linda, CA; 2 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Johnson will lie in state at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Sunday from 12 until 2pm.  Social distancing guidelines will be followed.

The funeral service will be private with the Rev. Joey Haynes officiating.  Interment will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
