Dr. Robin Hines.

Update this afternoon on resuming high school sports? The Georgia High School Association’s board of trustees meets today at 3 p.m. On the agenda: “Executive Director Dr. Robin Hines will address the committee on several issues including a discussion of plans to return to GHSA activities.” A common assumption is the start of conditioning for football on July 6 — normally the GHSA’s dead week. We’ll have updates as they develop.

Coach (John) Reid and Dr. (Eric) Holland want to have a winning basketball team. I am excited to get to work there and be in Rome…its a great city.”

Coosa High wins 2A sportmanship trophy: Georgia’s Electric Membership Cooperatives sponsor the Georgia High School Association Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award and today announce the 56 GHSA-member high schools that will receive this year’s award. The award honors schools that demonstrated impeccable sportsmanship during the 2019-2020 school year. Winning for 2A: Coosa High School.

“Congratulations to all of the region winners of the GHSA Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award for 2019-2020,” says Dr. Robin Hines, GHSA executive director. “It is an honor for these member schools to be selected by their regions for this award. The characteristics of good sportsmanship are critical to the development of our young people as they transition into productive adults. The GHSA applauds our schools on this accomplishment and appreciates Georgia’s EMCs for their support of this outstanding recognition program.”

Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation announces the addition of two new employees, Parky the squirrel and Rex the retriever.

Parky and Rex are now the official mascots of Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation. There have been many rumors about how Parky and Rex ended up at RFPRA but the best were told by two Unity Christian School fourth grade students.

A writing competition was opened for all fourth grade students in Rome and Floyd County and the winner was Caden Larrabee. The runner-up in the competition was Abigail Hillesheim.

Both of their complete stories can be seen at rfpra.com.

Outtake on Caden’s entry: “Once there was a squirrel named Parky. He lived in Rome, Georgia. He had no friends. Every day he took a walk in the park enjoying the great sounds of the birds. But one day he heard a new sound “Woof! Woof! Woof!” it went.”

Outtake on Abigail’s entry: “Moooom!” Parky Squirrel yelled from upstairs “What am I supposed to pack in my suitcase if I already have a box with clothes in it?” “Sweetie,” Mom said with a chuckle, “Pack what you’ll need at Gramp’s  and Gram’s house, Dear!” “But my favorite shirt is in my box of clothes.” “ Then improvise, Honey Bun.” “Impro-what?” “Improvise, Sweet Cakes,” Mom replied. “It means…” She had barely started when Parky burst out “It means to tell your mom to get you more clothes!” “Oh Parky, Darling,” Mom said to herself.”
