Tommy Palmer, a legend in Georgia high school football media, tells fans he’s entering hospice care as his cancer battle nears an end.

Georgia high school football legend Tommy Palmer shares some sad news with fans. Tommy has been part of many high school Friday nights on radio over the years, including Rome and other parts of Northwest Georgia. You can read his entire post by clicking here. We join the Georgia sports community in thanking Tommy for decades of coverage and commitment.

“As many of may know, I have been fighting cancer in my right lung since August 2017.  As of this date, I have gone through three major surgeries, Chemo, Cyber-knife, numerous Biopsies and so much more. This is for information purposes only and not for any pitty-party gatherings at the Palmer House, or out in the vastness of Radio land.

“I have produced and anchored the Scoreboard Show since 2005 and I want thank the GHSA, Alan Sharp, Dr. Ralph Sweargin, Dr. Gary Phillips, Dr. Robin Hines and John Clark of GNN, for the support they have given me over the past 15 years as well as all of those loyal show sponsors.

“I have recently returned home after a lymph-node biopsy and right lung surgery and biopsy, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The results were not what I, or my doctors, had hoped for.

“After many consultations with my thorasic doctor and my oncologist, 15 days of rest and recuperation at St.Joseph’s Hospital, it is now time for me to begin my final days under local hospice xare.

“I have no idea how much time I have left here on earth, but, I have run the race…kept the faith and will continue to do so until God calls me home. Over the next few months and weeks, I will be available by Instagram, Twitter and telephone and will be answering your questions about hospice care, battling this dreaded disease called cancer. If I am unable to answer your questions, I will provide links to professionals who can help. There is no dress rehearsal for this territory I am about to walk through and I ask for your prayers as we move forward into the last half of 2020.”

Genesis Leggett

U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announces their 2019-20 Indoor All-Americans with Berry’s Genesis Leggett earning recognition.

Normal policies dictate that All-America honors are awarded to student-athletes who score any portion of a team point (top-eight in the final of an individual event or as a member of a top-eight placing relay event) at the NCAA Championships.

In lieu of conduction of the national championship this season, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Executive Committee adopted the following criteria:

  • Based on the selected participants for the national championships initially announced by the NCAA on Sunday, March 8, the following will be recognized as All-America for the 2020 Indoor Track & Field season:
    • Individual events: ALL student-athletes declared and initially accepted into their event.
    • Relay events: Members of ALL relays who produced the performance that was declared and initially accepted into their event.

A total of 675 athletes from 161 different institutions were honored on Tuesday.

Leggett qualified for nationals for the second time in her career, ranking 20th in the weight throw this season with a mark of 17.00m. When she qualified in 2018, she was the first Berry track & field athlete to compete in either the indoor or the outdoor NCAA Championships. A senior from Live Oak, Fla., Leggett is a four-time All-Region selection and a two-time Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.
