Earler this week Pleasant Valley High basketball coach Ryan Chambless was approved by the Rome City School Board to become the next head boys basketball coach at Rome High School. Joining Chambless as the assistant basketball coach will be Marcus Herbert, who most recently served as head basketball coach at Weaver High in Alabama. Chambless has 17 years coaching experience and served the last 3 years at Pleasant Valley. He also served as boys and girls basketball coach at Jacksonville High School, taking teams to state championships.

Chambless is an Alabama native and played for Jacksonville State University. He and his wife, Anna, who teaches at Piedmont High School, have four children. In an interview with Hometown Headlines, Chambless says “It is a great opportunity to come to Rome High. They take great pride in their athletics and they want to be successful on all sports. That is what drew me to the school. Coach (John) Reid and Dr. Holland want to have a winning basketball team. I am excited to get to work there and be in Rome…its a great city.”  As for Herbert joining the staff as well, Chambless says, “He’s a perfect fit.” Expanded report in East Alabama Sports.

Model High School has named Brandon Patch Head Baseball coach for the 2020-2021 school year. Coach Patch is a 1997 graduate of Coosa High School and a 2002 graduate of the University of Georgia.


Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation announces all parks are open and all amenities at the parks, including playgrounds, restrooms, basketball and tennis courts, skate parks, etc., also are open. Restrooms will be cleaned once a day. Signs will remain in place encouraging social distancing with groups of less than 10 people. No scheduled rentals will be held at any pavilions at this time.

  • The boat ramp will open at Lock and Dam Park and fishing will be allowed but campsites will remain closed.
  • Parks and Recreation crews will be following the extensive guidelines set up by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the National Recreation and Park Association to help avoid the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
  • The Ridge Ferry Park Farmer’s Market will kick off its season on Saturday, June 6, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. and run each Wednesday and Saturday until early October.
  • The Parker Center and Northside Swim Center will remain closed and all special populations programming is suspended until further notice.

YMCA reopens May 26 (day after Memorial Day). Screenings, masks to be required; pool, locker rooms closed for now. New hours will be in effect, including closed on Sunday and an hour each weekday for those 65 and over. YMCA reopens

Racing returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway on June 6-7 — but not fans. The Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 returns to thet Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday, June 7, at 3 p.m. It will be closed to fans. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the race will take place without spectators in attendance as part of NASCAR’s effort to bring live competition back to a worldwide broadcast audience on FOX and PRN. Also included on NASCAR’s revised race event schedule following the outlined plan and without spectators, the unique Atlanta doubleheader featuring the EchoPark 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race and the Vet Tix/Camping World 200 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race will be run on Saturday, June 6. The twin bill begins at 1 p.m. on FS1 and MRN for the VetTix/Camping World 200 and concludes with the EchoPark 250 at 4:30 p.m. on FOX and PRN.

The five rounds of the 2020 MLB draft will be held over two days, June 10 and June 11. Both days will be televised by MLB Network. On June 10, the first 37 picks (the first round and the first competitive balance picks) will be announced, beginning at 7 p.m. ET. On June 11, the remaining 123 picks (the second through fifth rounds) will be announced, beginning at 5 p.m. ET.
