Rockmart motorcyclist killed early Sunday: Shane Elrod, 44, of Rockmart died instantly early Sunday after his motorcycle slid into a vehicle on Braswell Mountain Road around 1:47 a.m. Sunday, according to Polk County Coroner Tony L. Brazier. Elrod’s motorcycle slid into the approaching car and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:30 a.m., Brazier says. The accident occurred off U.S. 278.

From the Georgia State Patrol:

Vehicle #1, a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Shane Elrod, was traveling west on Braswell Mountain Road negotiating a curve.  Vehicle #2, a 2009 Kia sedan driving by a 16-year-old Acworth boy, was traveling east on Braswell Mountain Road. Elrod failed to maintain lane and was traveling too fast for the roadway conditions. The motorcycle traveled into the eastbound lane of Braswell Mountain Road.  Elrod was unable to gain control of the motorcycle and laid the vehicle over onto its left side.  It continued traveling west in the eastbound lane.  The teen saw vehicle #1 lose control and come to a stop in the eastbound lane of Braswell Mountain Road.  The motorcycle made impact to the front left of the sedan.  The motorcycle rotated, coming to an uncontrolled rest facing north in the west bound lane.  Elrod died at the scene; the teen escaped injury.
